The reason is to achieve enhanced functionality while remaining with iOS. Yet unlike years past when Android was still gaining traction, today it makes much better sense to switch platforms instead of jail breaking iOS only to still suffer with a tiny screen.

Like I said Some people choose to Jailbreak to gain features just as some Android users Root their devices to gain features. Other then that the op is here to say they love there G3. My problem is I like a device I can easily fit in my shirt pocket. Jailbreaking or rooting doesn't fix that.

This is more of a curiosity question than anything.

Why do poeple jailbreak iPhone 5?

I can understand jailbreaking the iPhone 4S and below (2-3 year contracts and don't/can't switch phones).

The Galaxy 3 has more features and it came out around the same time as the iPhone 5.

Quite a lot of apps are cross platform as well.

The only 2 reasons I can think off are:
1. Small size of the phone
2. Piracy (games appear on iOS first)

If you have a jailbroken iPhone 5, could you share some insight why you chose to jailbreak it instead of going to a non Apple phone?

Reasons I can think of:

1. Size (as you mentioned). Not everyone wants to carry a tablet around in their front pocket. Not saying 5"-6" phones are bad, but they're not for everyone. Personally I'd like a 4.5" phone, but not a phablet.
2. Ecosystem. Having both iOS and Android devices, I know that iOS devices have access to more and better apps. Also many games not only appear on iOS first, some will never make their way to Android...and those are usually the best games.
3. Better apps. To my experience, Apps available on both iOS and Android are more polished on iOS. Not always the case, but frequently.
4. Little risk of malware and virus'. The malicious app industry is ramping up in Android big time. In Asia the problem is really bad, but the situation is getting worse throughout the world...and it's going to keep getting worse. Some apps are making it onto Google Play with malware coded in that only gets activated months after release. This allows the app designer to gain a larger installed user base before getting pulled. As a result, Google isn't always catching them. Not a major problem yet in North America but I suspect it will get worse.
5. We don't want to lose our iOS based media purchases. Granted, kind of crappy that we have to worry about this, but it is a reality.

Android still isn't close enough to iOS in ecosystem to justify the switch. Most of my favorite games are not available on Android; however there are only one or two Android exclusives that interest me (I have them on my N7).

There are other phones which can do all those but why choose an iPhone 5 instead of the alternatives?
A lot of the reasons are the same reasons why people use prior iPhone models. It's not just a matter of comparing the features on paper for many. Don't just assume that your preferences and priorities are universal no matter what the topic.

Thanks for the responses.

I probably should have reworded my question a bit better.

@labman: I have an iPhone 5 and have not jailbroken it.

From reading the iOS 7 forums, it looks like the main jailbreak will be for bite sms (quick reply).

I would jailbreak it for freedom, the rest falls under that...

the main reason for quick reply??

without jb you cannot download things from safari, don't have flash player, can't add music without itunes, don't have a files explorer, don't have quick toggles, can't install third-party apps... stock iphone is nothing without jailbreak!!

This sums it up. We must have our devices freed.

What you said are true but not everyone needs these tools.

I don't need flash player. My Itunes library are organize therefore i can just use itunes to sync my music. I never had the need of files explorer. iOS 7 will have quick toggles. I am happy with the app store app.
