The iMac does not ship with one.
...and I don't think any computer ships with two adaptors.

Yeah, the iMac doesn't ship with an adapter.

It's funny that you can buy a top of the range PC laptop and it only has VGA out. Talk about penny pinching....

DVI all the way!!

My iMac has a mini VGA port... those are not standard in the PC world. I had to pay an extra $20 to plug my computer into a projector that had every connection known to man... except for mine.

it is infact a standard port, my schools tablets use that connector and i use them with my ibook every now and again, it's just not widely used.

but an ADC to DVI adapter costs 20 bucks, seeing as ADC is DVI usb and power the adapter just changed the ports and looses the power and usb, though i wish one would come out that let you use those usb ports too, two usb 1.1 ports on my g4 cube is too few, expecially when they are slow through hubs, i'm slowly moveing as much of my kit as possible over to firewire and wireless/networked, the only usb stuff i use are my scanner and thumb drives.

well he said in the original post that his powermac had a funky apple connector and he needed to buy an expencive adapter to use it with anything elce, which is untrue as funky->regular is cheap but regular->funky is expencive as all that other **** needs to be added to the connector to make it funky as ADC is a superset of DVI.

He did? I don't see anything about Power Macs in his original post.

Why do the macs have to have special display connections?
I was wondering why they have the weird looking ports for screens instead of just having a paralell one?

Yeah. When I still had my Quicksilver, I was just going to get a new video card when I got my DVI LCD (was using a CRT with VGA. Yay for acronyms.) instead of dealing with that mess. Instead, I sold the Quicksilver (and the CRT) and got a Mini and the LCD. It was amazing. Suddenly, my computer and monitor together were smaller than either my computer or monitor had been before on their own. Sure made moving easier. :D

Interesting discussion, but the OP hasn't done us the courtesy of replying saying what Mac and what connection they are really asking about. Meh.
He has an Intel iMac. The clue is in his name ;)

you do not need the 100 buck adapter, you are going from an apple display connector to a DVI adapter.

if i'm wrong and you prove it i'll paypal you 20 bucks.

i own both adapters.

Sorry. I though by "original post" you meant the commonly understood "post #1". And I think this is what CanadaRAM was trying to get at in his post #38.

anyway, the point stands for every special apple connector, useing normal moniters with an apple connector is cheap as apple connecters are generally vga+other stuff or DVI+other stuff.

the other way around is generally more trickey and needs usb in and power in the case of ADC.

anywho it would of been nice if ADC was adopted by others i'd much prefer it over DVI, more elegant.

no thats cheap

you have an ADC port on your G4, it contains VGA DVI and USB signals plus a 28v line to power ADC moniters, you can extract the vga and dvi with cheap adapters, if i could have only one moniter output it would be ADC.

Yes, I too can confirm the iMac contains no adapter. Any other Mac with a Mini port, (VGA or DVI), contains both VGA and DVI adapters though and the DVI machines have the adapter to VGA, (PowerMac, Mac Mini, MBP, 15 & 17" PowerBooks up to their discontinuation).

For all older setups that require a DVI to ADC adapter, those things are costly still. Not sure in the US, (although prices here suggest about 100 bucks), but we have one left at work priced at £79.

I'll sell my DVI-VGA adapter that came with my MBP for $30 shipped anywhere in continental US. Paypal only. PM me if you want it.
Right so everybody here states it costs $19 to buy this adapter, (and the same cost for all others too), and you try and sell yours for 10 dollars more. Why not try selling it in the marketplace and see what fools will fall for it.

Anyway, I'd stick with it. You never know when you might need it to connect into a non DVI enabled TV that has VGA still or projector with similar set-up.
