texting means i dont have to actually come up with simple talk... just straight to the important stuff without any distractions inbetween

Thank you all so much for answering my question. Texting makes a lot more sense to me now. It seems like it's a convenient portable E-mail system when you just want to say something quickly. I hadn't understood that before.

I must say, it concerns me that students are doing so much texting during their classes, when they obviously should be paying attention to their teachers/professors.

As for texting during a sporting event, aren't you there to enjoy the game itself?

And finally, some of you are sending 1000-5000 text messages a month....Holy schmoly! How much of your TIME does that represent?

I've sent 3000 text messages...EVER.
5000 a month boggles my mind. However, I can kind of see it. Imagine an IM conversation; a lot of people text back and forth like that.

"Hey, how are you doing?"
"Pretty good, yourself?"
"Not too bad, kind of slow today."
"Oh? Why's that?"
"Just a slow day at work."
"Well, I just ordered my iPhone."
"No way! I want one."
" :) "

= 8 texts. If you're having an ongoing conversation via text messages they can pile up rapidly.

I agree about class. I never, ever texted during my classes. I may have opened iChat once or twice though while taking notes... :( maybe 4-5 times ever. We had a physics professor that would basically read the textbook to us.

I use texts for simple things...usually when people are busy and can't take the phone, at a party or in a club (where it's too loud for conversation), or if I want to send something to a bunch of people at once.

For example, if I want to head to the dining hall, I'll text 5 of my friends at once "Dinner?". They'll text me back, and we'll meet up for dinner, or wait a while for someone.

I do, however, hate when people start conversations with texts...if you want to carry on a "hey" "how are you" "how are the 'rents?" kind of conversation, call me. :)

I don't think it's about age. I am not 20-something, but I love texting.

Communication with Foreign Friends:

I used it to communicate with my good friend who doesn't speak English well. I couldn't understand her via phone, so we'd text one another.

Privacy for Gossiping:

I like to complain about my co-workers to my mom, but since she refuses to learn to text, I have to call her from outside to gossip.

Getting to the Point:

Via a text message, there's no "What are you doing? (long pause)" chit-chatter. It's a friend saying - "Hey, I'm on the way." Reply - "cool, c u @ 3" Boom, that's it.

Time to Lie:

On the phone, it's harder to lie. Via text message, you have time to THINK about your lie, then type it out. No stuttering on the phone or nervousness in your voice, y'know.

Texting RULES!!
