my reply for what its worth is simply because a majority of users who aren't very techy like all the additional camera features etc that the makers bake into their devices. if you could offer me the htc one with super camera experience, complete beats audio (I do hear that you can activate it) etc. Basically the pure google experience as such was initially designed for developers who don't care for all of the bells and whistles like zoetropes etc.

I would like to ensure excellent noise cancellation and call quality as well as good camera experience. Others have things they like as features that aren't included in the pure experience. in my opinion that is.

Do you think the people you see outside are going to be more impressed with that eye tracking gimmick or pure android?

A few reasons.

I think the main reason is that the general public aren't interested. It's only really geeky and techy people that would be interested. Most people with android devices couldn't even tell you what version of android their phone is running let alone whether it has a custom skin on top.

Nexus devices aren't as attractive as other OEM devices. Samsung, HTC et al have all the bells and whistles which dazel buyers. Nexus devices in comparison are quite plain and minimalistic.

Google don't advertise their nexus devices very well and they aren't readily available for people to buy or even try in stores. Look at the Nexus 4 launch debacle and the nexus 10 is still not available to buy in stores.
