Apple carry out their repairs/battery replacements in a back room away from the public so you won’t be able to watch them do it.

No, I had a screen protector on when I took my last phone in for a battery replacement and the screen protector was returned in the same condition I left it.
This is good to know. I’m so worried. My coworker took his 12 pro max and they broke the display so they did a screen replacement same time. That’s worse than just a screen protector. But even then I worry about that. So I just worry about the process. I might have ruined my battery health beta testing so it’ll be my first time doing a battery replacement at Apple.

It should be fine. The number of phones damaged during battery replacements are few and far between so I wouldn’t be too concerned. I have had 3 battery replacements with no problems at all.

"Forever"? Or, like an hour or two? Big difference.
No, like a whole day. I don't know if it's because I have so many apps or what, but most of my experiences restoring phones have involved waiting many, many hours for all the apps to get put back on. Not to mention the headache of signing back into things in the following days or weeks and discovering which apps won't store passwords in the keychain.

OK, so backups take a while to restore. At the end of the day you have lost nothing and all your data is there. The initial post here was about "data loss" and my point is that if you do things even remotely right, that's not much of a danger at this point.

And, if it's speed you're after, your best bet is to do a full and complete backup to a Mac and restore from that instead of iCloud. That will also catch all your cached files, photos, music, etc. As USB-C rolls out, we may see the speed of that process increase too.

Restoring from a backup is a huge issue. Yes, performing backups is trivially easy, but I loathe having to erase and restore a phone. It takes FOREVER.

Same for me - major reason I like using custom charge optimizations to preserve batt capacity, and also procrastinate updating phones til the iOS is no longer supported. I’m not budget constrained, I just like to highly customize my gear, and find it a PITA to upgrade after that. Same for goes for motor vehicles, bicycles, camping gear, etc. Wife always leases cars, I always buy them - different strokes for different folks.

The other important factor is simply knowing/trusting the gear/device so well. Much easier to diagnose problems and fix them, and it takes months, if not years, before I really start trusting gear/gadgets for critical use (eg, off grid backpacking).

I’ve had several batteries replaced and only 2 iPhones had to be swapped out for a refurbished device. I always make sure I have a backup in iTunes and one in the cloud, in case my phone is swapped out. For the times that my iPhone wasn’t damaged, I still had my data on it.

Do you need to give Apple your iPhone unlock code when you leave the phone with them for a battery replacement?

I've had the battery replaced and lost no data. They just have you sign off on it in case something bad happens.

I had to turn Find My iPhone off and i can’t remember if I turned my passcode or not.

I do not mind turning Find My off when I hand it over to Apple, but definitely would not want them to have access to my entire iPhone.

This is why so far I had only changed batteries in my previously erased iPhones, which is very inconvenient if I wanted to keep it on.

I had my old iPhone XS in for a battery replacement. I did a reset before taking it in as I intended to gift the phone to my niece. Battery health was 75% and I had no issues doing it. they replaced the speaker and camera in the screen as it was damaged during the battery replacement.
