every iPhone I have ever recieved seems to always have some kind of imperfection out of the box, no matter how many times I purchase from Apple I always seem to find some tiny hairline scratching, or small imperfections with their devices out of the box, I have come to the point where I just expect it now, why is it Apple has such poor quality control, does anyone else have this issue when they recieve their new apple products?

You have to look at the bigger picture before you make a claim like that. Look at the total numbers of iPhones sold in any given year and you understand that some imperfection from the manufacture process will pop-up. This happens in any industry. However, if you come to a forum such as this you’ll think that there is such a widespread problem you will then make an error that many more issues are prevalent than they really are.

You had some bad luck, but for me and many others we have never had a problem with the Apple products.

PS: Then there is that post that you made about a spider on your screen that may have caused a scratch. Believe me that was an eye-opener for many of us on this forum.

I often hear people complain about how all these terrible things are always happening to them in life. Often times it’s the same type of thing over and over. Like always dating the wrong person. But they never see that the only common connection is themselves.

Why do some brand new cars have imperfections? Why do brand new houses have imperfections? Why do some babies (through no direct fault of parents) come with imperfections (read: defects)?

I know nothing is perfect, but I just want to buy and recieve an iPhone which doesn’t have any scratches out of the box

Nice story but your experience is not typical which is why Apple garners such strong devotees to the brand. Try buying Samsung for a while and you’ll truly understand the meaning of poor QC.
I agree. Apple QC is pretty incredible in my book. I have purchased easily 10-12 devices over the years and every one of them from Apple have been outstanding in terms of quality and so forth. Computers, iPads, iPods, Watches, phones, now that I think of it I’m sure its more like 20 devices if you add in all the stuff for the kids in the past 15 years. I could make lots of arguements about things Apple does wrong, but QC is not one of them.

I consider myself pretty OCD. Hell, today I put on a naked wrap on my XS Max, fit was perfect, but ended up noticing that a dog hair got caught under the wrap. My dog is white and the hair was so fine I don’t think most people would notice or care...But I do! I ripped that wrap off and put on a new one. That being said, I had a 3GS, 4S, 5S, 6S and now the XS Max and never had to return a unit or get one replaced. Your experience is definitely atypical. I also find Apple compared to many other companies to have excellent QC. Maybe you’ve been real unlucky?

No. I have never had a defective iPhone out of the box. Never returned one for any defect. Apple’s quality is good.

I’ll preface this by saying that some types of people often attract issues repeatedly. That being said, I’ve bought several iPhones and noticed hairline scratches or chips in the frame. I’ve also gotten a few iPads that I’ve had light bleed in the corners.

nothing man made will ever be perfect, but I do think that when you come across certain D fax from previous phones or iPads, you tend to have a little more scrutiny and looking for those same defects in the future.

One of the two iPhone maxes that I ordered had hairline scratches on the screen. The other one that I have has a little bit different colors on the left versus right side of the screen. Otherwise it’s mostly uniform and given what I’ve seen other users post on the forums, I’m likely to just stick it out with this device rather than playing the panel lottery. I think a lot of it comes down to picking our battles and not making a mountain out of a mole hill

The last two iPhones I bought were defective. I don't think its widespread, I just think I was unlucky. A 6s had a white line on the display, I was told it was an LCD issue. I exchanged it immediately. The last phone I bought, a 7+, has a broken camera. A family member brought it for me while abroad, and he didn't touch it. He just booted it to see if it worked. Therefore, the camera is still broken. I took it to an Apple Store within days of my warranty ending (my country has no Apple Store. I had to wait until I - or somebody I knew - travelled), and - this really bothered me. They could have made an exception considering my situation - but they refused to exchange it, because, as the warranty was close to ending, they had to check everything was fine with the phone before exchanging it. This would take 10 days. The family member that travelled didn't have 10 days, they told Apple this, and Apple said "Sorry, there's nothing we can do".
The phone is still broken and the warranty is long gone. They should have done something. They knew I had no more time, and while it isn't their fault I live in an awful country, the phone was still in warranty. I don't care for how long. It was still in warranty, and next time I - or someone - travels, I strongly doubt Apple will do anything. They'll probably charge me the OOW fee.

I've been buying iPhones and iPads since the first ones, and Macs since 2010 ... no issues with scratches or 'imperfections' out of the box. I had one MBP about 4-5 years ago that came out of the box scratched... a simple exchange resolved the issue for me (the replacement was perfect, BTW). Stuff happens, but not nearly as often as you suggest.

For apple it would be gold plating. They won’t get any more money for the same product.
So why should they invest more in quality when for 99,9% of the people it doesn’t matter?

No, I haven't had any problems "out of the box" since I started buying Apple products in 1996.
Any time I have had an issue, Apple's customer service has been great.

What I have noticed is an increase in people who do silly things like incorrectly apply a screen protector to their iPhone and post pictures on line asking why their screen looks distorted.

Maybe I'm the exception, but I have never taken any of my iPhones out of the box and inspected them for micro-scratches, dust under the camera lens, dead pixels, or anything else
I've just turned them on, booted them up and gone through the restore process, put it in my pocked naked and moved on with my life

Apple use the same Chinese manufacturers to make parts and to assemble as many other brands.

But... if you pay a premium price for a product, you expect it to be flawless.

So that creates an expectation that they should be perfect. They are not, they are simply mass market products.

What sets apple aside, is that they are willing to tolerate OCD returns. Which is fair enough... given the price premium.

But Apple can insist on tighter tolerances (less variation from spec), which can improve quality but decrease yield ratios – leading to a higher cost to manufacture.

I suppose my phones might have scratches on them ... I never really looked. If they do have scratches, At this point I wouldn't know if the scratches were there in the box, or if they are from being in my pocket, or if they are from wiping the phone off on my pants or shirt. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It's just a phone.
