No it won't. I've never ever heard of this happening and I've run hundreds of miles with my Classic and with my 1G iPod.

Well now you have. Even if you'd never heard of it, common sense and a little knowledge of how hard drives actually work could lead you to the conclusion that running with your iPod (i.e. constantly bouncing it around while the disk is being read) is a bad idea.

The mini used CompactFlash cards for storage....

Edit: my mistake, some digging shows that they used something called a microdrive (compactflash II).
Yeah, basically a hard drive designed to fit in a CF II slot. (It is very easy to replace the hard drive with a real flash card.)
And Cassie, MicroDrives are designed to be moved about alot, they're used (or were) in professional cameras, and probably have some kind of small shock absorption tech, as to reduce damage.
Probably. Always wondered why they didn't advance the technology further. I guess it just came too late in the flash era.

Not that they worked too well. I had 2 2.2GB microdrives in my D-70 fail:(

The Classic will survive (and i do only mean survive) until the day apple can release a flash based ipod at roughly 100gb

Once that day arrives then the HD based ipod will be gone .... they could have already bumped the capacity up since 1.8" hd's are higher incapacity but they chose to even ditch the 160

The classic is on life support ... Apple is all about NAND flash now

ipods in the "classic" form factor with greater than 100GB capacities are theoretically possible now, aren't they? i mean, macbook airs use 1.8" drives don't they? and they are available in 128GB versions.

they havent even mentioned it in 2 years. the 5g had the 5.5 g update

Yes they have. It had a change in capacity last September (2008) so that it could become thinner yet hold more data. I'd say that was definitely mentioning it within the last 2 years. In fact, it was within the last 6 months.

The funny thing to me is that the iPhone3G won't work wth Nike+ but the 2nd gen touch does support it. It's basically the same thing minus the 3G radio, and HDD isn't a factor on the phone.

My iPod 4g made it through 1 run without skipping. The second run caused it to skip once - for about 2 minutes. It only started playing again after i started my cool-down. The third time, it locked up completely. That was the first time I had an iPod lock up on me. I thought the world had ended. Phew. I remember it like it was yesterday. I never ran with it again.

I now have a Nano (1g) and am loving the Nike+ thing. Just wish it would track my runs with more options (overall time at each mile marker would be a welcomed addition.)

Uh...

I have been using apple for over 10 years now. And I can say I have never been as angry at this company as I am now. For a company that is "great" to their customers why can I not use the nike plus hardware on my 80 gb ipod classic that I spent 250 bucks on last year. Because in the end they are greedy and selfish no different than microsoft. This really has turned me off to the company that they make me feel like in order to use their software I have to buy a brand new ipod. All apple needs to do is make a software update and they could easily make it compatible for the classic. But will they ever? No cus they don't care. This really has turned me off to apple more than ever before. Let me know if I'm nuts and there is way I can make it work on my 80gb ipod.

Because it's a hard drive based player and flash drives are much more suitable for running.

You KNEW it wouldn't work. What a ridiculous complaint.
