Why does Apple only give you a lousy 5GB free?

i see what the OP is saying. we have 4 devices that we can use iCloud on. but if i only use my 1 icloud login, i only get 5gb shared between all 4 devices. The part that doesn't make sense is you can sign up for apple id multiple times with the same device with a new user name and get 5gb of storage free. Yeah you can't sign in more than 1 icloud id at a time to take advantage of the storage but it's there for free. The more devices you have, the more penalized you are with iCloud storage.
