An Island in the Salish Sea
i jailbreak, use spotify, sometimes find movie for free online if its not for rent on itunes, i dont avoid buying software, i buy my apple products from apple, and dont do the last thing..

Its different for me because I am not wealthy, I have a pretty low income and don't have the money to afford everything I want at the asking price.

Apple is far from that situation where If i recall right, Tim Cook said that apple has so much money they have no idea how to spend it

@snberk- why would he close the thread, that is his opinion, and there is a lot more that can be said- it was a very 1 sided post...The thread shouldn't be cloesd unless an Apple employee who has knowledge in this area gives the definite reason (which probably is to keep stocks high or something) I understand that Appel is saving money and that whole "you'd do it if you were in their position" but what does Apple really save by avoiding the tax laws here? Less than a billion? (Its a question, not rhetorical- i really don't know)?
Because no one, imho, has posted anything new since. There are the usual "I'm 'entitled' to steal 'cause I'm poor" arguments, and the usual responses to those, and of course the usual "because it's legal for Apple to do so."

Apple exists in a global free-market economy. That means that they can make things globally, sell things globally, and park their money globally. A lot of people forget about that middle bit... that the money they have earned internationally is what makes up the bulk of their cash stash. Why should Apple pay US taxes on money earned outside of the US? Interestingly, the US is unique in taxing it's citizens on their international income. If you are a US citizen living and working in Canada, for instance, Uncle Sam wants it's share of your income (luckily there are tax treaties which allow you a credit for the tax you pay to Canada.)

Many people on this thread seem to think that the US is entitled to tax the revenue earned off-shore, even if it has already been taxed in that jurisdiction.

We don't need a an Apple employee to explain why Apple has parked their cash off-shore, it's basic business. Apple's primary responsibility is to their shareholders.... they own the company. The company has a fiduciary duty - in law - to attempt to maximize the value of the company for the benefit of their shareholders/owners. Paying taxes that they don't legally have to decreases the value of the company, to the detriment of the shareholders.

What I find ironic is how 'socialist' this thread is. "From those, according to their abilities; to those, according to their needs." Or... redistribute wealth from those that have it to those who need it. Or... I don't make a lot of money, so I help myself to other people's stuff, and you have a lot of money so you should give more of it away to me and to the state that supports me.

Because they can.

...

edit:
additionally, it is their duty to their shareholders to protect their cash hoard, as posted above.....

No, it is simply good business sense. If the rules allow it, not working to your advantage within the rules is just handing some other guy a competitive advantage on a plate...
...
Yep.

There is nothing unethical about working the tax code to reduce the amount of taxes you have to pay to Uncle Sam, simple as that.

using loop holes to game the system is unethical.
If you set legal as ethical you set bar insanely low and you really should have your ethics check.

So, it is unethical to follow the tax code as written? I guess you must not take any deductions then.

How is it unethical to try to reduce the amount of taxes you owe to the government?
