I’m currently on holiday in Greece. Right now it’s 28 degrees but I’m sat in the shade of a bar, not in the sun at all.

Been using my phone for a while and the screen is already very hot to the touch, even though it hasn’t been in have direct sun at all.

Is this normal? I thought these things had better cooling with some kind of vapour chamber? It’s at least as hot if not hotter than my partners 17 which has been used in exactly the same way for the same time!

Just wondering really…

The 17 Pro is much more effective at heat dissipation, which is why it should feel hotter to the touch than the 17. It is effectively spreading heat away from the SoC to the outside of the phone, keeping the internals cooler.

I’ll be honest I didn’t consider this..!

That is the phone dissipating the heat away from the chip and battery, have to say though when I was in Zanzibar earlier this year my 17PM was pretty good, only got hot when I kept recording videos and uploading to iCloud and Instagram. The weather was mostly between 30-35 degrees Celsius day and night (around 86 to 95 Fahrenheit) with 67%-70% humidity, and it performed beautifully, barely got warm when I used it to browse the web, text, stream videos, phone calls, editing photos etc…

I live in the high desert of northern Nevada, currently 92F/33C which is a normal day but will be hotter tomorrow. Drive down to Las Vegas on occasion, so far this year 17 Pro has been great even in direct sunlight outside. My 14 Pro and 15 Pro would overheat fairly quickly and dim the display to almost be unusable. No problems with the 17 Pro. And I have it in a clear Spigen case that also covers the camera plateau. So far, so good.

I had a similar experience on my first 15 Pro Max running launch iOS 17, it would get incredibly hot where the SoC is and dim the screen when using it for SatNav on a hot day, not seeing that with 17 Pro Max, I constantly have Waze running via CarPlay and if I use it for longer periods it may get warm but not hot, 15 Pro Max would get hot right where the SoC sits.

My 14 PM gets so dark in sunlight I can barely see it. It drives me crazy. It gets a little warm on the MagSafe puck thingy but during a normal day I don't notice much heat.
