add me to the list of annoyed listeners.

it happens to me usually if i havent been using the speakers or volume control for a while.

i usually hit the up/down key 3-5 times and it will register the first keystroke after a few seconds, followed by a pause (the volume bezzle almost fades out) and then it registers another keystroke.

during this lag sequence i generally hear some crackling, and sometimes it will snap out of it after it lags on a few keystrokes and i hear all of the 'volume change' sound effects at once. its really kind of loud and annoying when im wearing headphones.

i find that if i keep hitting keys (by keys i mean volume up/down), the lag sequence will take longer to break out of itself.

stupid computer. other than that i love it
that is a perfect description. thats exactly how it goes for me too, and im surethat goes for all the rest of everyone else experiencing this problem also.

has there been still no remedy? ive gotten used to it now. so it doesnt anoy me as much lately.

Bump.

Well, I was just google'ing this issue since it has been bother me too, but I'm relieved to find out it's not only my computer. I hope Apple will address the issue soon, but here's a quick little remedy (short of).

If you want to use the function key to change your volume just press it once until you see the response on your display. Once the volume display appears, you can go ahead and press the function key more times.

Pressing the key initially multiple times will make it lag more.

So is there no real solution for this problem? Cause I have it as well, and have not seen many people offering any real help. Just confirming that it happens to their machines as well.

Is it assumed then that this is a flaw in OS X? This problem isn't the biggest deal, but I'm getting pretty tired of it.

Yes, I'm tired of it too, but don't know of any solution. I am so used to immediate response from Windows. Oh well, I guess you can't have everything.

I'm also having this problem. To clarify it further, if you have "Play feedback when volume is changed" DISABLED, the delayed clicky slowness will stay forever, UNTIL you either play a sound or open the Sound control panel.

It will then stay responsive for a time, and then go back to the delayed clicky slowness.

If anyone has any kind of solution, I'd love to hear it.

This is not a solution, but...I have noticed that certain apps make a big difference on the delay. Actually a big difference in general. On my aging iBook G4, I disabled Dashboard and stopped using Mail (I moved my 1.5 gigs of mail to my iMac and I just use web-based mail on my iBook, which means I can get all the received and sent messages into Mail when I get home anyway).

Anyway, though, without Mail running, I've gone back to being able to run FF with several tabs, Adium, Preview with a few PDFs, iCal, and iTunes, and getting snappy audio overlay responsiveness...

Ugh, yet more trouble with Mail 2.x.... :(

And for my iMac G5 / 2.0 ... of course it's always had snappy responsiveness for this. :)

I have this problem on my MBP sometimes, especially if I have video playing from youtube or whatever. I've seen it with adjusting the brightness, Instead of closing the lid at night, I leave it open, but just turn the brightness down so I can stay connected to AIM, IRC and whatnot. The next day after I get home from work, it seems to take forever to turn the brightness back up
