Strange. My late 2008 MacBook can do it all without any issues or overheating.

Keep in mind though that buying a second/hand electronics is always a gamble especially if you don't know what you are doing. You should replace a battery as well as the thermal paste/clean the dust inside the machine etc.

Yes definitely, this machine needs a new battery and get clean because the last owner didn't do it since 2011. I think the real problem here is the poor mac optimisation and the "service battery" thing, It drains the battery really fast and I believe it overheats the machine faster.

You mean 2011 MacBook Air optimised less than my late 2008 MacBook?

Battery is very important component in a MacBook, when it is bad, don't expect any performance from your machine. This is a given and important to know when buying used MacBooks.

IDK, I'm not an mac expert but this kind of issues never happened to me before using pc. Battery is a big issue though, I will replace it soon as well with a good clean and thermal paste change.

Playing video for a few minutes makes my computer get so noisy it sounds like it's about to explode.

How come my £500 TV can display lovely HD images, whether off-air or via iPlayer/Netflix, and not bat an eyelid whilst my £1,200 Mac finds it so difficult?

I feel the same as you, as a lifetime apple consumer, (iPhones) I have never had such problem with them but now that I own a mac I feel like they are doing something on purpose, just like this guy explains in a video.

Fittingly, whilst watching that video, my lap became very warm and, at 2m 53s, the fan noise of my MacBook Air became very intrusive.

My late 2008 MacBook has similar issues with video playback. it will be behaving sitting at 49 C surfing or coding until I hit a website with video playback then instantly it spikes to 70 even 80C and the performance degrades and this on one with an ssd and 8GB ram . I have smcfan running and have to knock the fan up to 5k rpm in order to keep it usable. Have cleaned out the cpu and heatsink assembly but still the issue remains. Wish I could figure it out as other than that glitch it has been an incredibly reliable machine, still running on the original battery in fact .

You did not mention if you replaced the thermal paste?
Late 2008 MacBook is a great machine still today but it suffers from the old "user replaceble battery compartment" design which makes it run 10-15oC hotter than it should. For instance my 2.4 GHz C2D MBP7,1 runs cooler even in a clamshell mode than my 2.0 GHz C2D Late 2008 MacBook5,1 in a normal "open shell" mode.

Actually did not redo the paste. It is on the list the next time I am inside it . I removed a lot of matted dust from the cooling fins though so thought that would do the trick .
It is weird how inconsistent it is . I use it fairly consistently pretty much the same way day after day and some days it stays cooler than others even on the same sites.
