From this website, I'm sure Xroad would absolutely love to place this on their app, but they're pointing their finger at Apple.
Right. Which just goes to show that, currently, any turn-by-turn navigation is not allowed and anybody who claims there are apps that have it are wrong, let alone "they can have it, just not voice". That's even sillier!

It's very silly. I just don't understand...

The weird thing is that even though there is no voice prompt the app still has turn by turn with arrows and real time guidance. unless i am missing something?

Yes. This already seems like it's breaking Apple's stupid rule, but Apple is still allowing it. For me, I wouldn't even mind a little audible chime when a turn it coming up. This is just forcing people to look down at their iPhones. The funny thing is the disclaimer on G Map: "Do not operate this device while driving."

I don't think it has anything to do with voice, safety, power of the device, nothing of that sort. What it is, is money.

Apple wants to capitalize from the turn by turn market, as it is a huge one. Just wait and see, I am willing to bet in the next few updates apple will introduce their own application for turn by turn directions, and make it the only one available on the iPhone for which you will pay a premium for, my guess is the 10-20 dollar range, possibly even an additional charge per month such as VZ navigator with Verizon.

If it was preloaded maps, id be down with that. AT&Ts coverage isnt good enough to replace a stand alone

LMAO
10-20 dollar range? You call that paying a premium? Come on... noone is going to put all that effort into making a decent GPS Nav program for 10-20 dollars when they could easily charge $100-200 (or even more) and people will still buy it.

If TomTom was to only charge $10-20 then it wouldn't only be a possibility, but a guarentee that there would be high monthly fees associated with it too.

What are you talking about? I think you mis-read my post. I'm not talking about 3rd party, i'm talking about Apple making a turn by turn GPS application for the iphone, and could charge about 10-20 dollars to purchase it. I am just guessing with that price though. The reason they do not allow 3rd parties to develop turn by turn apps, to me is simple. They eliminate the possibility of competition when they finalize and make public their version. There is too much money out there to miss out on if Apple lets 3rd parties make turn by turn gps apps, since its in such enormous demand. People would rather not buy a tom tom or garmin if they don't have to...I know I would much rather have it all in one device.

I agree, it would have to be pre-loaded...between cities it can be pretty sparse, and nothing worse than a map loading when you need to know where to go...but I really think this is why they have the restriction for no turn by turn apps.

I'm guessing that if anything, Apple will take a page from other AT&T phones and have a monthly fee for some "in-house Apple" turn by turn app. I used to have a Blackberry Curve and gladly paid $9.99 a month for Telenav. Great program and very easy to use ..... and didn't lose track of where I was if a call came in, unlike G-Map. I just got G-Map yesterday and all in all, it's pretty good (by current iphone nav app standards). It's a bit hard to use though. Seems like they wanted to cram tons of options into it, but didn't think of the most basic function. You can't just type in an address and go. You have to actually search the address in the "Where To" section which takes a lot longer than it should. I think they will be really trying to improve it with future updates. The last update was good enough to sway my opinion and purchase it.

Even if Apple required disclaimer on all turn by turn nav apps, imagine what kind of reputation Apple would get if the user was using an iPhone as the navigation device.

So what you're saying is Apple has to 100% guarantee every piece of software that runs on an Apple platform? If Jeff Goldblum hadn't killed all the aliens in Independence Day, would that have reflected badly on Apple?

You people are really reaching for this stuff because you just don't know. Neither do I. But I doubt Apple's main fear is some uber dumbass driving into a swamp because they failed to watch the road instead of the GPS 99 percent of the time.
