Why doesn't the iPhone have Nokia-like profiles? I miss them!

As I'm self employed, I leave my phone on during the night in case any phone calls come in. However, I don't care about texts or emails.

With all my old Nokias, I had a 'Sleep' profile where text tones were muted, but the phone ring was on max. I miss that so much!

I have that the iPhone is either everything on or everything off - it's such a shame. Most nights I'm woken a couple of times by the 'bling' of an email or the BEEP BEEP of a text.

I know I could go into the phones settings every night and adjust them, but that's a pain in the arse when such an expensive phone could offer something so simple.

(I also think it's ridiculous that the volume of the alarm is dictated by the ringer volume - the alarm should go off at a preset volume regardless of other settings)

I agree - a proper profiles system is a real miss. I used to have a range of profiles setup for different scenarios on my old Nokia S60 phones, which all goes out the window with the ever simplistic silent switch on the iPhone. Yeah, it's nice and easy to just flip a switch, but it just isn't very flexible at all.

I've always thought timed profiles would be cool - so I could set-up that between midnight and 8am, the iPhone wouldn't make text/email noises.

And office workers could set it so that between 9am and 5pm on weekdays, the ringer doesn't go off.

Unfortunately, I'm assuming no App could ever do this.

I still think the best profiles come from RIM. While Nokia profiles are nicer than nothing, my old Blackberry had fully customizable alerts. Each type you could set ring tones, volume, vibration style and intensity, and time them.

Basically you could customize any communication to do anything you wanted, that was perfect.

If you dont have a clue about jailbreaking dont assume that you will screw up your iphone and have no way to fix it. If you can press 2 buttons and follow a few simple steps anyone will be able to fix and restore an iphone to factory settings.

Agreed. I'd also like to add that before the iPhone, I was very much a fan of Nokia phones, although I can't fault the silent/not silent, and I don't really miss profiles in the slightest.

There was a Windows Mobile program a few years ago that could do profiles based on locations (in addition to time).

I loved that. As soon as I got near work, the program could sense it, and would adjust to my "work" profile (quieted rings, etc).

If I'd drive away from work, it'd sense that and adjust back to the "normal" profile.

I miss that!

Considering the number of menus and submenus there are to configure all the iPhone "radios" like 3G, WiFi, BT and then sounds, notifications, etc., it would seem to be a natural application to be able to setup presets like Airplane Mode for Office, Home, Car, Being Tiger Woods, etc.

I too had them on my Nokias when I was living in Asia. Even better were the location-assisted profiles. I had a few of my fave movie theatres set to go to silent a few clubs to max out sounds and a work profile.

That said, I too have no interest in Jailbreaking. But profiles with GPS would be a nice addition.

That is immense. Awsome! I didn't realise this already existed. I'd LOVE to have a phone with this.

I'm curious about how this works: does it use the GPS? Wouldn't having the GPS on all the time kill the battery in a few hours? Or does it use cell triangulation?

Yes, I'm sure the numerous posters here and on other sites who have stated that their phone was messed up by jailbreaking would agree. Just because it works 99% of the time, doesn't mean it doesn't mss up 1% of the time. Nothing works perfectly. All I was saying was that it could potentially go awry.

Jailbreaking is a software hack. Nothing you can do with a jb iPhone can permanently screw up the phone. You can always plug it into iTunes and restore back to original software.
Show me one person that damaged it permanently by jailbreaking.

The only problem with bb profiles is they take for ever to set up. Each email address/app has its own setting across 5 diffent profiles and there is no way to have it link up ringtones across all 5 plus holster no holster. Pain in the ass during an os update having to reset each freaken ringtone. I love the customization I just wish there was an easier/ faster way to sit everything up

Show me one person that damaged it permanently by jailbreaking.

It may not damage the hardware, but I'm always worried about the damage it could do to my warranty and/or contract. I don't want to risk jailbreaking it and O2 throwing me off the network (like MS did with the X-Box recently).

This phone cost me a lot of money and I don't want to risk that investment, thanks.

Would be good to be able to quickly switch to an energy saving profile, ie turning brightness down, location off, 3G off, etc rather that changing all the setting individually

We're having to use some nokia's for our corporate email and whilst the majority is crap there is one feature i'd like apple to introduce is for the push email. Have an on peak and off peak setting.On the nokia mail for exchange you can set times and days that would be peak and off peak and set your email to push during these times.

This would be great in as much as I could have my work email pushed during office hours and my personal mail pushed outside of those hours. Also I'm sure it would save some battery time too.

The weird thing about this thread is that everybody has excellent ideas but nobody has answered the question - why hasn't Apple done this?

Is there some technical barrier in the operating system that prevents it? Or perhaps there is some executive at Apple who doesn't like the concept (rather like Apple's reluctance to adopt two-buttoned mice)? Or maybe Nokia holds the patents? Or is it simply hubris?
