Probably the same reason they still don't allow users to change the email alert tone (although it is funny watching a whole bunch of people grab their iPhones when the email alert sounds).

Hubris is most likely in my opinion - Apple know best, after all.

You mean because Apple thinks it users are to stupid to handle anything over very basic options.

It may not damage the hardware, but I'm always worried about the damage it could do to my warranty and/or contract. I don't want to risk jailbreaking it and O2 throwing me off the network (like MS did with the X-Box recently).

This phone cost me a lot of money and I don't want to risk that investment, thanks.

JB will not get you thrown off a network and if you restore your phone before bringing it in for repair the warranty is still valid.

I believe my contract more than some random guy on a forum.

I must be missing something... How do you think that anyone on "some random forum" would know anything at all about why the "iPhone doesn't have Nokia-like profiles"?

This is maybe something better suited for the Apple feedback page rather than creating a topic that's just going to turn into a big JB vs. vanilla debate.

My guess would be that they just haven't got around to it yet. I would bet that it will be tied to a revamp of the whole notification system. Notification seems to me to be the second most likely feature that iPhone OS 4.0 would focus on (behind third-party background apps/task switching).
