Why haven't Apple bought Shazam?

I disagree. I think I have only ever used it once and that was just to see how accurate it is. I don't even think I have it installed on my phone anymore.
How would they make a fortune - its a free app?
I don't see any synergy in apple acquiring this app.
I think the OP meant that it would induce people to buy more music from Apple.
That's a main reason that other phone makers / carriers provide the app for download. (To the OP: Shazam has been around since 2002 in the UK.)
Seems like a perfect fit, far more so than the Stocks app.
I don't know how shazam make money these days, when it first launched and you had to dial 2580 it used to charge 50p per tag but now the app is free and the tagging is free. I assume apple must be paying them to provide the links to itunes store.
Sure. But I believe the OP thought it could be a good idea to add Shazam to the list of included apps.

I beg to differ. At least in my case Shazam pulls ahead every time. It correctly identifies even remixes for me.
How is it better? It costs $4.99 and Shazam is free. Also Shazam has never failed to correctly identify a song when I've used it.
I hear what you're all saying and to answer a few of the points:
Personally, I find Shazam much more useful than Voice Memo and Stocks apps that are forced upon me, and I don't see how either of those can make Apple any money (apart from being 'features' to make the units more saleable).
Shazam (or any other music recognition app) however, is a great tool for a net-enabled music player with access to the iTunes store. By buying shazam, Apple could further integrate it into the unit. Imagine - you're listening to the radio in the car, you press for voice recognition and say "Shazam" and the phone tags the song that's playing.
I appreciate that people can download it if they want to, but why not buy the company, include it on ALL iPods & iPhones and it would surely have an impact on iTunes store sales.

But these are only my opinions.
I've only ever had Shazam NOT identify a song correctly once and that was due to the snippet being too short (from a TV show) to be correctly analyzed. The main times I've had occasion to use it were when I was drunk in extremely crowded, insanely noisy bars with people yelling and making all kinds of noise right around me and it's come through every time.

I hope you don't work for any companies that hope to make money. Just saying "we don't make money on that" is all the more reason to try and push it further.
I too prefer Midomi. But then again, I got it back when it was free/really cheap (can't remember which).
Shazam is a nice little App that I have used quite a bit. The DJ's on the radio stations never tell you what song is playing so this little wonder helps out!

Never missed a song for me. I use it a LOT to find out what song is playing and it works wonders.
Nowadays it makes money on the iPhone from the referrals to the iTunes store. It gets a commission everytime someone buys a song from a link in Shazam. I hear it makes pretty good money, too.

Beats me. Don't care, either, but I do know Shazam is a lot faster on my Fuze than my iPhone.

Although... One time my friend sang the American/English version of Happy Birthday to Midomi to see if it would recognize him... It popped up and said "Korean Happy Birthday" ... My friend happened to be Korean... Coincidence?
