Personally, I prefer the iPhone because:
1. It looks better. No plastic, no breaks in the case, etc.
2. It's the right size. The Samsung phone is way too big for a lot of people to use and/or fit in their pocket. I'm sick of seing people with their phone hanging half way out of the pocket of their skinny jeans because it's 8 inches long.
3. It doesn't have any gimmicky features. From S3 site: Most advertised features are:
- Direct call, so if you're texting and put the phone near your face it calls the person: Possibility for a misdial, and are people really too lazy to press the "Call" button at the top of the screen now?
- Smart alert, gives you notifications about missed calls when you pick up your phone: This reminds me of a microwave I bought a couple of years ago. It has some "Food waiting" feature where it beeps twice a minute until you open and close the door. Annoying as hell.
- "S" Voice, basically a Siri for Samsung: I'm not going to argue which came first, but who needs a Siri. Its much faster to touch your screen, you can wipe the smudge off later.
- "S beam", lets you share stuff when the devices are close to each other: This has been around forever, and really doesn't get used much. That's why Bump failed after a while, you can send a contact in a text message in the time it takes to establish a connection with a specific device.
- "All share cast", show photos on TV and control slideshow from phone: This might be useful, but I know I never drag people into my parlor, turn on the TV and all the audio equipment, make them sit down, and project images onto the TV when I want to show a couple of photos. If it's a presentation, sure, but then wouldn't you just use Powerpoint on a laptop? Plus, I can guarantee it only works right with their creepy talking televisions.
- Buddy share cast, share photos with contacts by face: Facial recognition in photos is old news. It's been included in iPhoto for years. This is a really easy software modification, definitely not worth a spot on the homepage.
- All share play (God, can't they come up with better names? I'm going to confuse all these things!), cloud network hosted locally on a computer: Data hog anybody? Plus, you're really not going to use your computer from your phone. Imagine using Outlook on a 4.whatever inch screen. It's not going to work.
- "Smooth, minimal design": It's got ports and buttons sticking out everywhere, not to mention the cracks and port covers that always come off after two or three months. Don't get me started.
- "Pop up play", superimposes a tiny video over your texting conversation: I want to watch the movie, and not in a 1x1.5 inch box. Your friend's latest farmville score can wait. You'll never be able to focus on either, and both will turn out badly.
- "Best photo", picks the best out of eight photos in rapid succession: I'm a photographer. I'd prefer to take and pick my own photos, not have a computer pick the one with the best brightness, contrast, whatever and trash the rest. One of the junk ones might have some cool lighting thing that adds emotion to the scene.
- NFC: I don't want my credit cards in my phone. Phones are easy to get into, especially with all their easyshareeverything stuff. If I want to buy something, I can reach into my back pocket and pull out a wallet. Besides, anyone who bumps into you might "accidentially" hit your phone with a scanner. Someone will make a scanner, there's probably already one on the underground markets.
Those are my main objections with the S3. It is a good enough phone, but Samsung really can't come up with anything to do with it to make it something worth buying. After all, when its main selling statement is "I'm not an iPhone" you know somethings wrong.
