I am probably going to update to iOS 8. I love jailbreaking a lot and it's great and all, but I hate the idea of having out-of-date software. Plus, iOS 8 is really great and I don't think I will honestly miss my jailbreak that much

It's too much of a hassle for me to upgrade from 7.0.4 iPhone 5, it's working perfectly and having to backup/restore Cydia stuff will be a pain. Any speed improvements for the iphone 5 running on 7.1.1?

All you have to do is update and re-jailbreak

Use aptbackup and it will download just about everything you had installed through Cydia. I had a few things I still had to install but it got most of them.

Overnight, I updated from 7.0.4 to 7.1.1 and it took about five hours from backing up my Air to restoring. I hadn't backed up in three months so it took two hours to backup. Restoring took about two hours as well.

And back up all Winterboard skins/badges/docks that i edited to my personal preference (800MB and counting), iWidgets, SBHTML, GroovyLock addons, plenty of tweaks data such as Flex, HomeScreenDesigner, not having to troubleshoot which tweak is making X happen, battery drain, crash, memory leak and so on. A quick example, i updated HomeScreenDesigner yesterday and it took time removing two recently updated tweaks to find out it was HSD causing respiring when opening folders. Like many over here i don't consider myself a casual jailbreaker, i don't jailbreak to pirate apps, or download a single tweak and call it a day, my JB'n iPhone has been customized in details to my taste so it's not easy to jump into every update just because it's jailbroken.

^^Exactly!

And I've got stuff tweaked that was marginally working on iOS 6 that either will break on iOS 7 or will have to be tweaked again to work in iOS 7.

For a number of reasons to me, iOS 7 is worth NONE of this work.

Aptbackup still works with new Cydia? I haven't used it since iOS 4

Only draw back is that future updates of appstore apps will start to drop ios 6 support, somewhere you will have to make a switch.

I always follow @MN advice: try to stay on the highest JBable firmware.

The ios 7/8 GUI is just something to get over, i had foldericons for a longtime with all kinds of neat customs folder icons, but now use taptap folders and the stock icons.

Personal preference.

That's true. I already had a fight with one dev about his app being an "update" for iOS 6 when it was clearly an iOS 7 update only. He refused to help me because I was jailbroken. So, I gave him the middle finger in writing and side loaded the last iOS 6 update from my iPhone 3GS back on to my iPhone 5. Later he finally made the update iOS 7 only. I like his app and I bought it long before this, but because of the way I was treated, I will never buy the app he has for Mac OS X.

I hear what you're saying, but the only critical thing I need on my phone is the actual phone app itself. Everything else is extraneous. As long as I can make a phone call I'm fine. Even texting I can sacrifice.

However, long before any of that happens I'll have the iPhone 6, which will have iOS 8 anyway.

Yes, personal preference. My iPhone 5 will stay on iOS 6 and when replaced by my iPhone 6 it will assume the media device roll that my 3GS had. It won't matter then what's working or not and at that point with the iPhone 6 I will have to adjust. Hopefully when iOS 8 is jailbroken I can apply one of the few dark/black themes that are out there so I won't have to suffer too much.

But not on my iPhone 5.

I've had apps require 7.1 already when I was on 7.0.6. I'm sure support for iOS 6 will dwindle quicker when iOS 8 is out since it has all the new APIs.

Always JB > stock

Glad to be on 7.1.1 this time, not a 7.1 beta with evasi0n7.

Not going to bother trying iOS 8 beta even though window is currently open for both and a modified form of PanGu works with iOS 8 betas (thus far).

Glad though, crafty devs should have backup devices to test their tweaks out to maybe save some time into making it compatible when iOS 8 jb inevitably comes out as well. But maybe not, given its early in iOS 8 development cycle only being on beta 2.

Does anyone know where I could find this modified version of pangu?

Never existed in the public.

Sn0w said that it would take a lot more than a simple hex edit to get pangu working on ios 8 betas as ios 8 fixed a lot of things it used.

While I'm not denying that blackgeek got it to work on ios 8 beta 2, we still don't know how and can only presume that he must have used something that could not be released publicly (yet).
