Same issue. opera mini on iOS still scrolls slow compared to android version. I think it is the iOS that limits the scrolling speed. (this not just happens in browser but also apparent in general UI as well)

I noticed this too as soon as I got my iPhone. It's really irritating.

That's why when those who said a phone like S3 lags compare to iphone 5, I just could'nt comprehend why. If these people have really used the S3, they will find the ip5 UI feels really lethargic compared to S3.

Agreed. And to look at it another way, durability does not automatically equal quality (and vice-versa).

Even a top-quality automobile like a Mercedes-Benz or Audi will fail if you drive it over a cliff.

Haha, I like that. :)
But some will start to argue that safety rating is part of quality too. So how steep is this cliff? How long of a drop? Did we encounter a guard rail? These are all relevant questions! :p

I have just sold my nexus 4 and am going back to the ip5.
It's a great phone but the camera, android and general behaviour of Google on the launch left me with a sour taste.
Google is a great company and I love how they innovate but it's not enough for me. I now appreciate what ios is and for some it may be boring but for me it works.
I just wish the ip5 was £50 cheaper.

Safari is going to be the fastest browser on iOS because it has access to core iOS functions (which names currently escape me) unlike 3rd party browsers.

Not saying its the best option, just the fastest.

This is correct, and it annoys me to no end. That, and you can't make another browser default.

Yep.

I use safari simply because it opens as default so I use it for my normal browsing anyway. I really don't mind it but its a bit featureless, you can only have 8 tabs (usually not a problem for me) and turning private browsing on and off is a hassle.

The Nitro JavaScript engine, I believe.

I started with iOS devices at the iPhone 3G (and then 3GS and 4) and iPad 1 but eventually migrated to Android on the tablet (Moto Xoom LTE Verizon) and various Android phones before settling on the Galaxy Nexus.

It was nice to try something different and see beyond the walled garden that is iOS and Apple in general. However, I really found I liked the comfort of the garden and really didn't need much beyond it's walls so I went back to iOS on an iPad 3 and iPhone 5 and I got an iPad Mini for my business partner. iOS is stable and works well with the Mac computers. I still have a no contract Android unlocked Galaxy Nexus running 4.2 so I dabble, but for day to day iOS is just a simple OS that's easy to use. Sometimes all that Android flexibility and choice just aren't necessary.

Cheers,

I don't use a Mac but Chrome is great syncing between my iPhone, iPad, Xoom and PC.

Wow. How long did you have your Nexus 4? I didn't think anyone had gotten them yet.

I know... and it's all I use. I just don't understand the problems people are having. I don't the scrolling issues... or maybe I've just gotten used to how Safari scrolls.

I'm in this boat too. I have no doubt that Android has made huge strides in usability, but living with an OG Droid for two+ years burned me so badly on the platform that it would take a device-miracle to lure me back. I've been using a 4S for the past year or so and haven't had a single complaint (even Maps works fairly well for me).

iOS definitely has limitations and drawbacks but for someone who isn't a smartphone power user (I don't watch videos, don't play many games, don't try and use the phone as a mobile office, etc) it works beautifully. So many of the "advanced" features of Android are ones I would rarely use over what is available on iOS. Sure, you can download a song from one store and share it with friends via another (I'm just making this up, lol), but if I don't share songs/videos, that sort of functionality is meaningless. I'd much rather trade those features for simplicity, smoothness and reliability, but that's ME. I totally get why a lot of tech-fans are into Android... I do miss the ability to customize.

One must also consider the ecosystem and friend/family circles. My wife's entire family just went iOS, and my parents/siblings have done the same. Being able to iMessage or FaceTime would be really helpful, where switching to WP8 (or Android) makes me the odd-man-out. I'm the only tech-savvy person in my family so I have to take that into consideration as well... I'm not going to convince my family to adopt something like Android if they are comfortable with iOS. You can certainly mock Apple for "boring, idiot-proof" usability but it sells in droves to people who don't care that much about this stuff.

This 99% my same situation!! Good thing to know being in your early 30s doesn't make you the old man of the forum!

Glad we could come to an agreement. Youtube is still the same. Doesn't really bother me much now but it was a bit weird in the beginning.

Me too. I just don't understand why they did it, it was a really strange move. The new UI goes against Google's own User Interface guidelines when they should be encouraging developers to use Holo as much as they can. It's a shame, YouTube was a good example of a Holo app done right.

You wont feel it unless you use an S3 (or newer android). I use S3 as my primary phone. When I use the Iph5 UI, there seems to be a lot of inertia with the scrolling. It just feels lethargic compared to S3.

It's like on Android the screen scrolls as fast as your finger. On ios it's a set speed. Kinda unusual for me.

to me, I switched back from SIII to iPhone 5, simply because: iPod > Powercast

I was so frustrated with Powercast... the interface is great, but the lockscreen isn't. Try pressing the power button fast, and it becomes buggy... it won't show the media controls.

I love iPod's interface, and ease of use. Oh and all my earphones works better with iPhone (volume button!)...

Also, I like to listen to stuff off the background. You can't listen to YouTube off the background. Yes, I know you have to do some tedious clicking in the iOS... but at least when I "close" the app, (be it from Safari, YouTube app, or Jasmine app), and turn off the screen, the music can still run if you press "play" again from your earphones.

You can't do that with Android.

Scrolling on iOS scrolls 1 to 1 with your finger but then accelerates the longer you continue to scroll, so on a tall or long page if you continue to scroll it eventually zooms through.

And once at the bottom you can just tap the top to go right back to the top again.

^ I'm using a iPhone. It's not 1 to 1, no matter how fast I swipe the scroll speed has maximum it can go. Not a big deal, just weird.

Am I the only one who's OS agnostic? It seems it's impossible to agree that WP, Android and iOS all have their own merits and succeed at different things. With a LOT of overlap. It's essentially personal preference, yet there's people here trying to justify their purchase or tell others they're wrong for choosing product "X" If you buy a decent phone, I really don't think you could go wrong with either of the "big 3". All three have been around a while and are mature, and very useable.
