I didn’t think the size would be such a big deal given the difference is only about 3 inches?!

It is.

the iPad mini is about as large as will fit in the places I describe. An extra 3 inches is too large. It doesn't matter that it's "only an extra 3 inches" - those tip it over the edge between "will fit in pockets and the side of my gumboot" and make it unusable by these people without having an additional bag to carry it in. And if you've ever been in an underground mine, with your self-rescue equipment, etc. you really don't have the space for bags of electronic equipment because you're a passenger on a bench seat in a light truck and the only luggage space is the tray in the back (exposed to the elements). Besides, being in your pocket is a lot more convenient than in a seperate bag when you're walking about over broken ground in an underground mine for example.

Have you owned an iPad mini before? I have (an original mini - still have it right here but it is well out of support and I no longer use it). In addition to being that little bit enough smaller to fit in work clothing pockets, etc. they are also a lot more convenient to carry around in 1 hand if you don't need the screen space. And a lot of our apps do not need the extra screen space.

An iPhone would do the job in a lot of cases but they're much more expensive than a mini anyway.

The iPad gets thrown in my work bag in the same way a Kindle might.

It's light enough and small enough I carry it around 'just in case'.

When I get it out on public transport it's less conspicuous.

I just wish that Apple had made a version in the style of the iPad Pro 11, cutting the size rather than embiggening the screen!

A question has been bothering me for some time, what’s the major use case for an iPad mini? Especially, when the basic iPad is cheaper than the mini.

Size is the key. My wife has one for Kindle books and games and I have one with GPS for navigation in our campervan. I also have a few games and books on it and it's big enough for personal Netflix use.

Just got a great deal on 2 of them for my youngest grandsons. Someone posted Best Buy had them for $339 - I had just put a refurb order in at Apple for that price, and wound up getting new for the same price with free one-day shipping. I’m replacing their 4th gens because they only had 16gb and for videos and movies (military family so lots of car time), it just doesn’t cut it.

In case anyone’s interested Best Buy currently has a sale going on $100 off for the mini 5

$100 off? I just picked them up for $329, but that's not $100 off!

I just looked, and that's all I'm seeing - $329. That's $70 off, and the best price I've seen anywhere - cheaper than Apple's refurbished ones.

It's $100 off on 256GB models.

Well I made the trade, so I now have the mini 5! Now I just have to decide on a keyboard. I like both the Brydge and the flat Logitech shown in the thread, and have no idea which to choose.

I like that the Brydge will fold up and make a little mini laptop when I need to take it places, but would likely prefer the size of the “keys to go”when I’m typing for longer stretches - idk.

Help!

Enjoy. I was curious to see how I would enjoy the mini 5 myself. But ever since picking it up I find I use it all the time. I’ve sold my iPad Pro 12.9. And sold my 11 pro max and have a SE on order. The mini has been amazing for me and how I use my devices.

Sometimes I’d like to have the screen space of the 12.9 for movies. But overall the mini has been my most used device by far in a long while.

I’ve been toying with getting an SE myself. I have an 11. I like the idea of going back to a smaller phone Now that I can use the mini when I want to read in bed.

I’ll be curious to see what you think of your SE going from a large phone.

I did almost the same thing. I have the 10.5 Pro and use it all the time at the house. I was thinking of getting a mini. I ordered the SE when Verizon has the for preorder for $200. It’s on the way. If I buy a refurb mini I’ll have spent a total of $530. Not too bad. Then I can sell my 10.5 pro

Not a bad plan at all. Let me know how you like the mini if you get it.

I agree with majority of the comments that it’s about the size. Ever since the introduction of the iPad it was too big and bulky for me, but when they introduced the mini, I started to like the idea of using an iPad. The first gen didn’t have retina, so when they introduced the 2nd gen in 2013 I bought it at launch. I was a student at that time and the mini was just super handy for note taking, reading documents and Web browsing and didn’t take too much space in my backpack. Until I got myself a MacBook Pro it was my primary computing device, actually. Then the times have changed and the size and weight of bigger iPads have become acceptable, so I am now using an 11-inch Pro (which replaced the 2018 regular 9.7), but I still can imagine the size can be a dealbreaker. And with the Apple Pencil support the mini can be the ultimate note taking device.

Why buy the iPad Pro when an Air is cheaper?

Why Buy an iPad Pro when a basic Windows laptop is cheaper?

Why buy the standard iPad when you could buy a new pair of Jordan’s for cheaper?

Cost isn’t the only consideration when someone chooses the device they buy. As you can see by scrolling through these comments, there are various reasons why someone would choose an iPad mini.

Kind of thinking of the new mini cellular. Would be my first cellular iPad. I could then go to Apple Watch 5 for calls and stuff and leave iPad pros and iPhone at home. (Battery sucks on the iPad pros anyways)

I have the cellular version. I love having something that can get service pretty much everywhere, plus we have extra crappy wifi at home, so I like having the cellular option on all my devices.

I always had 8.4 android tablets before picking up a mini 5 for $250 on a Navy exchange deal a year ago or so.

However, as a keyboard I’ve been using this for years and it works great with any tablet or phone if needed and is portable.

Logitech Tablet Keyboard for Windows 8 Windows RT and Android 3.0+ Black (Renewed)

Logitech Tablet Keyboard for Windo...B07BB13Q2P/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_.82OEb7WS2PQ3

No idea why renewed and new is 60$ difference or so on amazon. I bought mine new for about $35.

I have a new 10.2 ipad I bought for my daughter’s schooling and honestly the mini is great in regards to the screen quality and mostly the size to be able to put it in pockets of jackets or back pocket of jeans. It’s easier to hold and read.

Loved my mini 5 and miss it dearly especially for travel. I recently got the 2018 11 pro because I started to dabble with video editing. Couldn’t justify keeping both. One day I will have it again.

Those who are still using mini 2 - which ios version is rhe fastest? I am on 12.1.1. Is 12.3 faster?

I mean you’re not going to see much different in point updates anyway. However later point updates are generally more optimised so you might gain performance improvement by updating to 12.4.5.

I have both the brydge and the keys to go for my mini. Typing is more comfortable on the brydge.... The better keys more than make up for the size.... I take the logitech when I want the lowest weight possible but space is not an issue (hand luggage for instance) and the bryge when I want it to fit in smaller spaces (and it's backlit). If I use the logitech I'll put the mini in a case that can cover it and prop it up...

3” is the difference in screen size, which is a diagonal measurement. Look at the actual device dimensions. There’s a big difference in physical size. I have an iPP 10.5 and an iPP 11 and a Mini 5. I use the Mini 5 in bed and for toting around in my purse.

If you look at the physical dimensions, you should be able to figure out what size pockets the various iPads will fit inside. I don’t have a PaperWhite any more (I have both Oasis models) but the Mini 5 is slightly larger than the old Kindle keyboard.
Do you ever use the iPad mini to read books instead of your kindle? I don’t own a kindle or iPad Mini, but I’m thinking of getting an e reader. I already am in the Apple ecosystem (own an iPhone, and larger iPad Pro and buy all my movies/music/streaming subscriptions through Apple) so would prefer to stay in the ecosystem with books too, but just not sure if reading on an iPad mini is a terrible experience compared to a kindle oasis.
