Really interested about Lightroom. Maybe I should give it a try, since Apple is selling unusable software.

Lightroom is slow as dirt on my brand new 6-core nMP with 32GB of RAM and running off of the internal storage. Rendering a 1:1 preview takes NINETEEN seconds. I am trying to apply adjustments en masse to 250 or so images at a time.

The adjustment brush tool is also not fluid. It's usable but jerky and very slow.

Maybe there´s something wrong with the new Mac Pro´s? New Mac Pro gate?

Another vote for this. I run Aperture at home on an old Mac Pro 4,1 2.6GHz quad core with an Nvidia GTX 560ti GPU, and it runs pretty well.
At the studio we have a nMP 6-core with D500 GPU's and after using the skin smoothing brush on about 10 images, Aperture starts to choke. It takes 5-10 seconds to load the next image, and then after skin smoothing is selected, Aperture stutters for about 5 more seconds (can't move mouse at all) before you can use the brush.
It makes absolutely no sense. I started suspecting it may have something to do with AMD vs Nvidia GPU's.
I tested this by taking the 560ti out of the oMP and installing an AMD 7970. Using the skin smoothing was faster for the first 10 images. Then, I started getting stutters and pauses as noted above.

I think it's Apple/AMD's fault. Too bad we probably won't get a fix since Aperture has been discontinued :(

That's not a bug, it's free advice - don't use the skin smoothing tool. ;)

I can't speak for an MP. However I just spent 4 months traveling and doing a lot of shooting on my wife's Mavericks 1.7 i7 MBA. It just zips right along. A 40,000+ image library. Also appears more stable than 3.4.5 on my aging c2d iMac running 10.8.

The iMac is in the throws of being upgraded to Yosemite. Testing 3.6 so far shows its fine. Its a referenced library. The MBA will go to Yosemite the moment I'm done with the iMac. Never liked Mavericks.

Seriously?
Thanks

I have done a lot more troubleshooting on this.
oMP: Installed an Nvidia GTX 680 and the skin smoothing tool ran even faster than with the 560ti (showing that GPU power actually does matter when using brushes).
nMP: I wiped the drive clean and re-installed Yosemite. Then I installed Aperture (nothing else). I then tried to use the skin smoothing tool and it started to stutter and hitch like before. The only possible explanation are either:
1) The AMD D500s on the nMP are not optimized for the brushes in Aperture, but the Nvidia cards are.
2) The nMP has some sort of hardware defect.

If you want a fast machine for Aperture, get a maxed out Retina iMac. Aperture is old software not optimized lots of cores....the same goes for Adobe products.

Quite serious. Blurred skin doesn't look so good. Gonna need Photoshop for skin retouching.

You're welcome

Yes, and we do use Photoshop for re-touching, but I'm not going to re-touch more hundreds of photos for clients. However, a light brush (tone down intensity) of skin smoothing is a quick fix to show clients some decent proofs. No one wants to see what they really look like in the beauty/fashion industry.
Since Aperture allows us to do this (and competitors don't), it is what keeps us editing with it.

Oh, I understand that. :D

Clarity brush in Lightroom does the same thing. ;)

I've heard that, but I assume it works the same way as it does in Capture One where it blurs the whole image (Nik plugins too). We prefer the eyes and teeth not to be blurred in headshots. So the skin smoothing brush is preferred.

I don't use it (much) but it's good (better than Aperture's skin smoothing) for the quick proofs you mentioned.
