That's basically what it is.

Having a larger screen opens up more opportunities, but its still a iTouch. The software may look different but there are many apps that look different.

Is it justification? Don't get me wrong, I'm awesome at justifying a gadget purchase, but do some of you feel that if you admit its a large iTouch, and you have an iPhone, will it seem like a frivolous purchase?

I'm not trolling, but I usually see an extremely defensive reaction to that statement. Almost like the the iTouch is a bad device and therefore being compared to it means the iPad is a bad device. I think the iTouch is great.

Because it makes the iPad a web surfer, video viewer, and app player That can't be an independent device for the price of a MacBook for the best model

They are a family no doubt. The iPad comes with the faster a4 chip but this has been discussed before on many threads - do a search.
Bottom line is Size Matters! You can have a big one or a little one.
Your choice.

People just don't like apple. Watch any other company make a tablet and everyone will love and have no doubts about it. Lol net books are nothing but small underpowered laptops but people love them.

Its iPad owners who, for the most part, dislike the comparison to a large iPod Touch.

I don't have to search, I know about the chip, but that's a bad reason.

That's like saying the iBook wasn't an iBook when it went from the G3 to G4, the Mac Pro isn't a Mac Pro when they upped its processor, or the iPhone 3GS isn't an iPhone because it used a faster processor, more RAM and a 3G radio.

Yes size matters, but that doesn't negate it being a large iPod Touch.

the argument for EITHER "side" is silly. Everyone has different use cases. A netbook might be the perfect device for some and hated by others. Same for the iPad.

It's not that people don't like Apple the same or more than Microsoft/other companies. There will always be staunch supporters who live, breath and die in one "camp"

personally - I find it silly. I have a lot of Apple products. I've used and owned a lot of PC products. I've never had any complaints on the most part with either. They both have strengths and weaknesses.

I don't consider it a large iPod touch. I'm not being defensive about it or trying to justify my purchase.

It's all about the experience. It's a very different experience on the iPad than on my 3GS. I consider it to be more laptop-like than iPhone/iPod touch-like. I already have been able to use it very differently than my iPhone.

More information can be on the screen. More detail. Just wait until the devs start creating new apps for this thing, then you will see that, although it's in the same family as the iPhone/iPod touch, it's a different species.

That's like saying the high-res MacBook Pro isn't a MacBook Pro because of the 13" MacBook Pro.

Well, of course it is large iPod Touch. Just like iPod Touch is a small iPad. Both form factors have advantages and disadvantages for various types of activities.

The defensive reaction is because people often use the diminutive 'just'.
"It's just a big iPod Touch". When called on this criticism, they often say 'hey man, I'm just stating facts, it's a big iPod Touch'.

It's the difference between saying 'the MacBook is a laptop' and 'the MacBook is just a laptop'. One's a factual claim, the other is usually a weaselly sneer disguised as a factual claim.

As I wrote in another thread:

Actually - to describe it as a big iPod touch, in my opinion isn't too far off. The problem comes with defense mechanism and/or believing that using that phrase is "bad"

It's not.

Love my touch. Love my iPhone. And have watched movies, viewed PDFs and surfed the web, etc on both devices when traveling and love it. But the iPad offers the bigger real estate. And with that comes a much better/more fun/enjoyable experience.

And yes - there's clearly a lot more APP wise you can do with more real estate. So there are things you'll get to do on an iPad you could never really do (well you could but it would be painful) on the touch/iPhone.

So it's all semantics really. Who cares whether it's a big iPod touch or not. It is what it is. And it does what it does. If you like what it does - get one. If you can't figure out how it will work in your life, then don't.

I wasn't going to buy one. Look at my post history. But then I realized that even if all I do is just watch movies and surf with it - then it's worth the 500 for a great screen/experience.

Of the masses, and with the current OS/limitations - a lot of people might not be able to ditch one or more of their other technologies and use the iPad exclusively. And if that was the goal for some, they will be disappointed and/or frustrated.

Those that came in with low expectations or have a low use case that will only increase with the technology as it develops will really enjoy it.

That's like saying the high-res MacBook Pro isn't a MacBook Pro because of the 13" MacBook Pro.

No, it's more like saying that the 15-inch MacBook Pro is just a bigger white MacBook. After all, they have the same OS, run many or most of the same apps, and look sort of similar.

Obviously there is a very big difference between the two and what they are capable of. Same as the iPod touch and the iPad.

The example I would use to compare it to is you have a tiny 13 inch television in your living room. Would it be a useless purchase to then buy a 40inch television. NO, because the experience watching tv on the 40 inch is so much better and more immersive than the dinky little 13 inch. No one says, well isn't the 40 inch tv just a giant sized version of the 13 inch and therefore uneccessary.

Its a totally different experience, and I think most people who have actually used the ipad will testify to that.

I believe that iPod Touch is to iPad as Macbook is to Macbook Pro. Very similiar, but one has slightly higher specs.

Either way, I'm dying to get my hands on one.

Edit, ok was beat to the comparison.

The iMac isn't a MBP because its form is different and isn't fundamentally portable.

The iPod touch/iPhone and the iPad have different forms as well.

I can't put the iPad in my pocket while I'm out or use it at the gym while I lift weights, now can I?

I can't realistically take an iMac to a Starbucks and use it there, but I can take my MBP.

As I've stated, my experience with the iPad is extremely different than my experience with my iPhone.

I don't consider the iPhone/iPod touch to be less of a device. Stating the iPad is just a larger version doesn't ruin the iPad- it's just not factual. Until you've really used one for a few hours, it's hard to understand.

Very true, and the MBP really is a big MacBook, but with higher specs. Same goes with the touches. The iPad is a large iPod touch, with higher specs. And in the same way the iTouch is an iPhone without the phone and lower specs.

It does not matter apple can give people everything they want but people will still find time just to hate on what they do. If I don't want an hp slate I am not going to go to a site that is made for it. You don't like the iPad that is fine but stop trying to make people that do want one think they are dumb or it just an iPod touch

I like the analogy another poster used in another thread

Size does matter. Try swimming laps in a bathtub. Now do it in a pool. Some things just are "better" with more real estate.

You misunderstand the thread. I already said the larger screen gives you more opportunities and is better. This has to do with resisting the comparison to a large iPod Touch.

The resistance is there being it's not an accurate comparison.

A 747 isn't just a larger version of a cessna.

That's a bit extreme and does the iPod Touch a disservice. Better comparison would be a DC-10; two engines instead of fours, smaller and with shorter range. The Newton would be the Cessna.

The problem, I think, is when people say it is JUST a bigger iPod touch as if that is all it is.

Read my post above. I don't misunderstand the thread. You misunderstand me. I wasn't arguing. I agree - the iPad is a bigger iPod touch. I don't take issue with that comparison. The larger real estate affords a different experience.
