Which has what to do with this thread?

Read my post above. I don't misunderstand the thread. You misunderstand me. I wasn't arguing. I agree - the iPad is a bigger iPod touch. I don't take issue with that comparison. The larger real estate affords a different experience.

You're right, I did misunderstand you.

Cheers.

Because it only begins to describe what an iPad is. It's like saying a fire engine is a big red truck. Well, yeah, technically it is, but there's much more to it that separates it from other big red trucks.

That's a bit extreme and does the iPod Touch a disservice. Better comparison would be a DC-10; two engines instead of fours, smaller and with shorter range. The Newton would be the Cessna.
Surely is absolutely correct. Your comment about the DC-10 misses the point completely. Unlike the DC-10, a Cessna is dramatically different from the 747. Therefore, there is very little overlap in functionality between a Cessna and a 747. There would be a little more overlap between an iPod touch and an iPad. However, there isn't much overlap.

The taunt that an iPad is just a big iPod touch is made by those who can't conceive of a use for the iPad beyond the functionality of the iPod touch. They are wrong.

Heck, it's sure not too big for me! I am thrilled with the large screen for watching Hi Def movies/TV etc to using games/apps. It's the perfect size absolutely. Gorgeous

I don't care if someone says it's a big iPod touch at all because when all is said and done, I'm a very happy iPad owner!

Honestly, no matter how much denial some of you all are in it is just a larger iPod touch. If they made the current iPod Touch let's say ohhh 9.7 inches what do you think it would look like?

That's basically what it is.

Having a larger screen opens up more opportunities, but its still a iTouch. The software may look different but there are many apps that look different.

Is it justification? Don't get me wrong, I'm awesome at justifying a gadget purchase, but do some of you feel that if you admit its a large iTouch, and you have an iPhone, will it seem like a frivolous purchase?

I'm not trolling, but I usually see an extremely defensive reaction to that statement. Almost like the the iTouch is a bad device and therefore being compared to it means the iPad is a bad device. I think the iTouch is great.

I think the iPad will appeal to alot of people due to it's newness. Remember when we were kids and got a new toy? After the new factor wore off, we just didn't like it as much.

How many devices do we need? We have phones, laptops, iPod touch, and now the iPad - they all access the net. Does it make sense to carry around a bag full of devices that do BASICALLY the same thing?

I use my Droid for checking and and sending email now. That has replaced my having to do it on my MBP. For regular work, I tether up to my MBP and go to it. Getting all my work done. I would not want to carry around an iPad along with my phone and laptop.

Given a choice would you choose a 52" HDTV or a 9"?
I mean, they are essentially the same, right?

it's not just a larger ipod touch, it's much faster. plus the things is only $499 and will satisfy my apple macbook cravings for now.

i think the ipad is a great idea and can't wait to get my hands on one.

I think that the complaint that "it's just an iPod Touch" has mostly to do with that it isn't a device designed for power users. A touch is a handy device, but you can't do a lot of serious work on it unlike a notebook.

What was being hoped for by a lot of people was to have all of the power of a notebook computer crammed into a slate form factor. If it multitasked, had Office and the Adobe Suite of programs on there, a transparent file system, had a capacitive and resistive surface, allowed USB connections, etc. and do all of that crammed into iPads form factor AND had a 10 hour battery life, then indeed it would be "magical." Probably literally, as I doubt you could currently engineer something to be able to do all of that.

So there is disappointment in that regard. The iPad is attempting to create a new market and device strata, which isn't necessarily aimed at power users. The device may very well be revolutionary, it just won't be in the way that power users may have hoped.

It would have a 9.7 inch LCD TFT display with 480x320 resolution, 6 hours of battery life for watching video, and no 802.11N or 5 GHz wi-fi support, just like the regular iPod Touch. The iPad improves on all those points.
