Think about this like Steve Jobs would. There's going to be a release date officially announced after two weeks have passed. Apple allows 14 days for return. They're not going to announce the date until the return period has expired for the hundreds of thousands of units already sold.

They got the people who wanted only the wifi, the people on the fence and the people too impatient to wait and had to be "part of it" on release day.

That makes alot of sense from apples point of view

Apple is capitalizing on the folks who cannot resist instant gratification. Nothing wrong with that.

There is an old quote: "a fool and his money shall part". It applies well here.

We all have choices. :D

IF Apple is going to release the 3G later this month, all the production conversation is past tense as they are likely already assembled but maybe waiting for a final software tweek. AT&T might also get it's software up and running to support the iPad 3G.

I will wait for mine while I use my WiFi model. I want it to be right!

This was several years ago and I'm working on finding the reference but he now claims this has been in the works for seven years. As recently as 2008 Steve Jobs said this about the Kindle:

It doesn’t matter how good or bad the product is, the fact is that people don’t read anymore. Forty percent of the people in the U.S. read one book or less last year. The whole conception is flawed at the top because people don’t read anymore.

Hmm interesting comment from the guy who just rolled out the device with iBooks and the iBookstore and who has been trying awfully hard to get publishers on board.

Apple will never make a tablet device - Steve Jobs

You're telling me that you really can't understand the difference between "this is the plan for this device I'm holding and we're selling next month" and "I'm not going to tell you our future plans because people will try to copy us."

In your mind that's all the same, huh?

I can tell the difference just fine. People here want to take Steve's words as golden. Well, then you have to decide which one is disinformation and which is not. What you quoted was my response to someone else quoting SJ has saying it will take another 30 days to get through the approval process as the reason for the different release times. I was pointing out that he can lie just as easily about that as never making a tablet or, as quoted in the post directly above yours, why an electronic reading device will fail. It seems like the Kindle (which he was addressing directly regarding its annoucement) has sold quite well.

As I said previously in this thread, I believe SJ is holding the 3G to get the WiFi people beyond the return period so as not to allow an influx of returns for people who changed their mind. I'm not the only one saying that in this thread.

So in other words, no. You can't tell the difference.

EDIT: I say that because if you could tell then you wouldn't have said you have to 'decide which one is disinformation.' It should be clear which is which.

+1. The 14 day return period was my guess as well. So the date likely gets announced on Monday April 19, the first biz day after 14 days have passed from launch.

If that is Steve Jobs plan, I foiled him. I purchased my Wi-Fi model at Best Buy. I have a RewardZone Premiere account. I can return mine in 45 days with no restocking fee. :)

Great. Now you just made SJ rethink the release date to the end of May. Thanks. :)

Apple will never make a tablet device - Steve Jobs

I call BS on the quote. I googled it and the ONLY place I found it is your message in this thread.

I don't remember Jobs saying that. I do remember a comment about not making a netbook, but never a comment about not making a tablet.

Remember the producten problems reported? They first wanted to get the WiFi model ready (as more people will probably choose for WiFi-only than WiFi + 3G). Takes a few more weeks to get enough for the 3G launch, and they are still going for a worldwide launch in late april.

It's all about Apple's marketing plan to get more of your money. Release the Wifi model first to reel consumers in. Knowing that people will use portable 3G adapters with it, they don't include a GPS chip. This way consumers will pay again when they release the 3G version, to get all the features of the iPad.

What I don't get is why Apple once again is being exclusive with AT&T. I would love to buy the WiFi only version of the iPad, if it had GPS and I could use another carrier besides AT&T. I get terrible 3G speeds in my area from AT&T, less than 1Meg downloads.
