yes, you've established that already; not sure why it needs to be repeated (any more, than, lol, my needing to write this response)... 🤔 🤪
Seeing as how that was my one, and only, response to this thread other than a SMH, I think you might have meant this for someone else.

If I enable ROOT user and log in I cannot access my hard drive: after all, if I could I could hack the contents of the Dock app to remove the outliner graphics.

I just want the 3D docks back. This flat nonsense with or without outline is hideous, simplistic and amateur. Sorry for the rant I just really don't like it.
Feel free to rant, that’s what I’m doing myself 😂 👍

which is why it's impossible for apple to make everyone happy. i would say the same thing about the old 3D dock: "hideous, simplistic and amateur"'. i do wish apple would give us some customization options, but... not really their thing. so we deal with what is, or find workarounds when possible.

i focus on my work, email, the web, etc etc; the things i use my mac for. no one should lose sleep over the dock outline... 🤔

How could you describe the old 3D dock as simplistic and amateur when the current dock is literally just a colorful, translucent blob that anyone could come up with?

these things we are expressing, known as opinions, vary widely. you're entitled to yours, i'm entitled to mine. that's how opinions work.

Yeah, you explained to me how opinions work multiple times here. Thank you for enlightening me in grown up stuff. You can also educate me and explain how wrong I am by explaining how the current dock is so sophisticated and professional. You always bring people down for their opinions but don't add something to the conversation with the exception of telling people they're wrong. You could try sometimes to talk to people without your signature condescending style.

this reads exactly like what you're describing. but, ok, you win; you're right, i'm wrong, and only your opinion matters. got it.

i think the outline on macOS version looks hideous, compared to iOS version. Even in dark mode the Mac dock looks lighter, while iOS has a more true frost/glass appeal that compliments whatever you’re in dark or light mode.

Didn’t Apple want to the design to sync between their devices? This has been such an issue ever since Big Sur, that every iOS design they implemented over to macOS looks like a downloaded “theme” from deviant art…

I noticed something cute. The App Store icon on the Mac has shading, where if you look at your iPad, the App Store icon doesn’t have shading.

All I want to do is find out how to access my hard drive when I boot in as a ROOT user, then I can muck about with the Dock app.

And "all that guff" about who likes what type of dock is just subjective, rather like whether you like blue cheese or not, so certainly not worth getting all hot and sweaty about.

I have never liked the 3D dock, and on about 20 computers where I deploy Xubuntu Linux I have a bar set up to exactly resemble a borderless MacOS Dock . . . BUT that does NOT mean there's anything wrong with a 3D dock.

Your mistake was comparing iOS to iOS, not your opinion.

Ok, I see now. Would have been nice if the other member had just said that to begin with instead of being vague. I thought both the OP's screenshots were from macOS (one normal and one "dark mode" - based off the wording at the opening of his post - "Even in dark mode the Mac dock looks lighter"). In any case, it's silly to call one "hideous" over the other. Yes, it's an opinion. It would also be an opinion to say sunsets are hideous, but most people would consider that a bit of an . . . "odd" opinion.

MacOS has a files app?

Can't let it go, can you? I assumed they were both macOS based on the OP's wording (and he didn't label the pictures to make it clear...I assumed the top was "light" mode and the bottom was dark mode), so I had no reason to analyze the icons in the dock since the topic was the dock appearance itself, not the app icons appearance. I was focusing on the dock(s), not the icons. If I had a doubt in my mind at the time as to which OS they were from, I WOULD have analyzed further and deduced that, but at the time I had no reason (in my mind) to.

Hope that explanation satisfies you.
