Why bother making a thin laptop then? Why not have a chunky one? Surely it's all about economising the space whether it is on a desk or on your lap, the same priniciple applies.

Since this is the iMac forum I believe I correctly assumed the original poster was speaking of the iMac. Clearly the same principles do not apply to a PORTABLE machine. In the cas of a laptop, thinner and in effect lighter are much better, no question. Considering you will not be lugging your iMac around all over the place then it is not a big a deal.

Well hell, let's just go back to big fat CRT monitors then, shall we? Space doesn't matter in the home/office, clearly! :)

Sorry, but that reply is just plain silly.

When you are designing a computer, one of the things you look at is how power you are drawing into how small of a space. You can compensate for lots of stuff in a small space by running up fan speed, but that makes noise. And I do like my computers quiet. Or you can compensate by making more space.

Making the current generation as thin as it is seems to be a poor decision, as my last gen 24" iMac with the 7600 video out performs it.

Does this mean now that Apple is evil? Of course not. I've been buying computers from them since 1978, and worked for them for 10 years after the Macintosh was introduced. And I'm sure I will buy more Macs in the future. Just not this one is all.

According to Macworld reviews, new iMacs are actually just a tad bit larger and thicker. If true, this thread is moot. :)

I second this. They did say they are thicker. I've also read the new GPU runs just fine.
And what does the OP know about building/engineering computers?

Damn you and your credibility.

How about this, just let the iMac be and perhaps the Universe will one day re-balance itself. I know you're just trying to help, but you have to let the Universe do this on its own.

Eh, in its stock configuration it's fine for most people. And I'm not really caring if they change the base. I'd just like them to offer a BTO for those that are willing to pay the extra is all. Charge me through the nose for the bigger video card. That's fine. I am thinking though, that the current design doesn't have a big enough thermal window for it. And that's my gripe with the design.

Like I said before, Apple isn't evil. I've been buying their products since 1978, and will do so again in the future. Just not this product is all.

Why did the Razer get so much attention when it came out? The smart phones where fatter and better.

Cause some people like sexy stuff, and some poeple like tech stuff, and some people like sexy tech stuff.

mac book pro have a better gpu... it should at least be an option on the iMac. I´m not a gamer, but if they wan´t to be in the gamers market they need to give gamers what they want.

No. They are about the same. Notebookcheck says the Mobility 2600XT is faster than the 8600m GT (at least in 3mark). Gaming its a toss up but not a big difference on either side.
