I'm confused - genuinely - why is this forum here? Can someone explain this to me?
For discussing alternatives to iOS.

Âren't there hundreds of other forums for non-iOS options?
It's 2026. There are very few forums left in general. No.
We are here to read about Mac and iOS, not other platforms.
There are many ways to own Apple products in one category, and non-Apple products in other categories. For instance, you can own a Macbook laptop and a Galaxy phone.

You're making a huge assumption, that every Mac owner wants iOS

The great beauty of MacRumors and other forums for that matter, is you can ignore a given forum, or topic.

Don't want to talk about android, or Graphene (Linux on a mobile device), just scroll down (or up) until you find a forum that aligns with your interest.

I will leave this here for you Maflynn. ha ha. spot on brother!

It also stops IOS forums being cluttered with non IOS chat 😀
Yep, that was one of the major reasons to create the this forum in the first place. Folks in the IOS forum wanted to talk about that, but some folks were comparing android or saying android was better or even just had android questions.

The creation overall made everyone happy except for a minority people who got upset that MR was hosting non-apple content. Many of those people tended to complain that MR would run news stories about Samsung, Google, etc.

funny anecdote, when Macrumors created forums for the iPhone back in the day, that annoyed a segment of the population because this place is MacRumors and iphones were not Macs.

Because it will generate page views, engagement and clicks from user-generated ( i.e. = free ) content.

Page views, engagement and clicks generate revenue.

Why should MR send users offsite to discuss Android instead of keeping them onsite. That's bad business,

Because not everyone uses Apple Products and this is a very popular website, it makes sense to have different sections for different things. I've been to some of the other Android forums, and most of them aren't anywhere near as active as this one.

Also, there is no "we are here" anything. You are speaking only for yourself.

To say it in a different way than others, a forum about Apple stuff doesn't need to be 100% dedicated to it. It doesn't cost much to have sections like that but gives us more topics to talk about.

I have a Mac, and a Pixel phone. I am confused as to why people like to come in here and slate anything non-apple. Anyone going into the iOS forums would be rightly banned for saying iOS is poorly designed, or trying to argue that windows is better than MacOS etc.

If the news feed was all non-apple, then fair enough, but even the most ardent Apple Loyalist might be interested in what the competition is up to. Stick to 9to5mac if you only want Apple, but then they cross advertise their other 9to5 sites, so you might accidentally see an android.

I will continue with linkmydroid/linkmymac to sync files and notifications across the chasm.

And I will wonder why we get these threads once a month or so.

OP, to answer your original question, this section exists for the following reasons:

  • Users who are considering switching to Android can start a discussion here, and then Apple users can try to convince them to stay with Apple.
  • People who gave Apple a try and were disappointed can come here to explain how terrible Android was and how wonderful it is to be back on Apple.
  • Apple fans can quietly get annoyed while following the discussion, unable to comprehend how anyone could even consider Android over Apple.

The same reason that any company would be reluctant to change from an established brand name.

Lol, it’s not a brand, it’s just a website address. Just switch it over and redirect the old address to the new one. No one is going to stop visiting the site just because the name has been updated to something more modern. We might even get more users if it were broader.

Given the large Macrumors branding at the top of the page I'd say it's a brand.

Because it doesn’t roll off the tongue the same way. Applerumors is awful as a brand name/website compare to Macrumors.

Take a look at this and tell me that Macrumors.com, LLC is just a website and not a business. LLC, by the way, stands for Limited Liability Corporation. That means Kim has established Macrumors.com as a corporation and the debts of the business are separate from Kim's own personal debts. I.e., a business. With a brand. Which is established and…copyrighted.

No, it’s a registered trading name

Try selling a product or services branded as “MacRumors”, and see what happens…
