Why Isn't iphone OS Licensed?

After all Apple has a monopoly on iphone OS and other companies should have the right to use iphone OS on their phones.

LOL, this is the same logic people who want Mac OS to be licensed to other companies use. How ironic. I wonder why more people aren't asking for this? Isn't it the same case?

Or maybe it's because Apple makes money from selling hardware and not licensing its software.
 
Apple is not Microsoft. They don't license software, they sell you hardware and give you the software. If Apple sold software for everyone, Aperture and other Apple apps that are used Industry wide would be available for Windows.
 
Because the iPhone is a horrible phone in terms of specs. If they licensed their OS no doubt some other company would release a more capable phone at half the price and undercut Apple's sales. Really the only thing the iPhone has running for it is the software and developer support. There's no way Apple would give those key aspects away.

Thats very very false..its not the top phone, but its CPU is very respectable, as is the RAM. The camera isn't out of this world, but not horrible/

Do you mean form factor? Thats more subjective

Would you like me to begin listing devices with 8 megapixel cameras? How about stereo speakers and larger screens? Physical keyboards? The iPhone never received video capabilities until the third generation and phones have come a long way since then.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not here to troll the iPhone (as I do own an 8GB 3G) but the specs simply don't stack up with other phones that are available on the market.

Thats very very false..its not the top phone, but its CPU is very respectable, as is the RAM. The camera isn't out of this world, but not horrible/

Indeed, these are the parts, including the flash drive, that iPhone excels in. The form factor is of good repute judging by all of the similar modeled phones that have emerged.

Funny how the iPod is the bastard child now, and everyone wants in on the iPhone pie.

1) Megapixels aren't everything. With the exception of low-light, the iPhone's camera is one of the best on the market.
2) Name a phone that does have stereo speakers; I agree about the screen
3) Some people don't like physical keyboards so it's not "better" if it has one or not.
4) Who cares? It has it now and is on par with most other phones.

At its price, I agree. The price difference between an iPod Touch and an unsubsidised iPhone is huge, but the hardware difference isn't too great (mainly just the phone hardware and camera). I believe that better hardware could be in there for the price that Apple sells at.

Most people don't buy unsubsidized iphones and in the iphone's prices range, the specs are actually good. Sure it doesn't have the best specs out of any phone, but Apple never claimed that and frankly who cares?

3. Would you not like the option? Perhaps not a good example, then. What of audio formats? Battery life? Real GPS?

My point was never to start a war about the features about the iPhone, which is why I will refrain from voicing my opinion about the specs further. Rather, I was trying to answer your question regarding the licensing of the iPhone platform; the software is what Apple is truly selling to consumers. The App Store is so developed that other companies have extreme difficulty in beginning their own and the OS is so fluid as to make it delectable to one's fingers.
 
Honestly you can debate back and forth until the world ends, however the fact still remains that the OS was built for the phone, not the other way around.



Also, why is it that the biggest conversation piece about a phone is the camera. Are you buying a phone or a camera? I'd figure people would be mostly talking about it's use as a phone.

I do not believe so. Like I said, I own an iPhone and am content with it. But I am aware that there are devices in the market, available to me at this moment, that offer better hardware-based features. The selling point for me and many others are the limitless features that the software can provide. But I suppose before the App store someone would call me crazy for wishing a phone had tens of thousands of different capabilities all written and sold by the users of the phone. Alas how times have changed.

Phones are no longer just phones. If the previous statement were false then we would not have a need for the expensive phones on the market.

Physical keyboard aren't specs, as much as they are form factor. Apple made the choice to not have that.

Camera, I'd agree....but those devices are largely high end. Make the iPhone camera mid to low end...but not "horrible".

The video capabilities point is mute, as even you admit it has it now(no sense in judging a phone on what it could do a few years ago.)

I'll agree the iPhone isn't top in all its specs, but its hardly horrible.

You don't seem like you're so content with you iPhone considering you said it had "horrible specs." Whether you like it or not, the iPhone is going to rank highly in nearly every hardware category. Sure, a handful of phones beat it in some aspects, but never all. The biggest issue always has been and will continue to be AT&T. Not that everybody has a problem with AT&T, but a lot of iPhone owners do.
