I have read a few of the reviews out there and there is a theme of people being very divded on it in two different factions, but really it is three: the regular joe (whom they claim will buy this now) and the techy (whom they claim won't buy it now, but is mostly true). The people who are actually buying it right now is the Apple fan. The kind of guy who can tell you how a I7 chip works but when it comes to iPad uses the word "magical" at least once when describing it. To each their own because I noticed a few people having second thoughts in buying it. Don't worry, that is just millions of dollars of marketing, product placement and reviews that not dare defy Apple. Anyways this is for you:

A few reasons. The first and most obvious reason is that as of now it is nothing more than a giant iPod touch. There is literally very little to nothing an iPhone can do that an iPad can. With that said it has a pretty decent processor that will be able to handle more complicated content than the current iPhones can.

No multitasking. Something that even a "regular" person is likely to expect on something more computer like in form, multitasking is a natural must have now and is something that we can likely expect to be fixed for both iPhone and iPad later this year.

No camera. It cost what? $10 to put a camera into something? If they did this, of course they likely will for iPhone as well, but the difference of the screen will make it a more interesting experience, and of better quality. I would expect as early as the end of this year or next year this will be fixed.

Price.
$130 extra for 3G when you can get a USB 3G dongle for $50 and pay $50 a month as opposed to $30 a month and $130. Really in the long run if you use that one iPad long enough you could save a little but chances are most people will have switched to a new one. The cheapest iPad has a meager amount of memory and cost $500. For $500 you can buy a new HDTV, a PlayStation 3 with a controler and a game, or for $500 more you could just get a Macbook which differences are weight and form factor. Apple famously released the iPhone for quite a bit of cheddar as well only months later dropping the price down to $300, then within less than a year $200 for something newer, and $100 for the older version after 2 years. Of course those prices are subsidized, but within 2 years time you had iPods with a similar situation.

Right now the only person needing to buy this then is the complete Apple faithful that love destroying their credit so something only they give a **** about on their block can be their pride and joy. Meanwhile, I suspect by this time next year we will be seeing prices of $300.

Connectivity.
Apple makes you buy an extra SD and USB dongle for $30 a piece. Granted not much if you paid $500+ for the thing but wait you just paid $500+ for the thing can't you at least get a SD slot? Something else I suspect to be remedied within a year.

A real purpose.
The iPad has no real purpose just yet. The whole books thing will help, but its not a game changer everyone thought it would be. I keep hearing it is more personal, and I have my own ideas of how well it could work, and would be a nice thing to have even right now, but this is something that will take time. A remote desktop application for mac literally letting you control every aspect of your computer has been created and looks and works great, that is a step in the right direction, I guess it is up to apps like that, Netflix, and other things to give more compelling reasons to buy in the months to follow.

Reliability. In the good ole days of Apple, when it didnt have close to billions of customers and rather close to a million, most of their stuff was built top notch from top to finish. Since they are pumping a million of anything out at a time now, of course more mistakes happen in the beginning of processing only natual, so dead pixels, brown screens, stuff over heating etc will cause you a lot of headache.

We don't care about specs, bblah blah blah.
It's the feeing of enjoying something so new and pleasant.

Some of us also know of Geohot, maybe you don't, so we're holding our breath for at least that.

My rebuttal:

- A major thing an iPhone/iPod Touch cannot do is display on a 9.7 inch screen

- Multitasking is not a deal breaker for me (right now).

- I have my P&S, or DSLR for photography, Worst case, I'll always have my iPhone if I am in a bind. I don't need or use video conferencing or video calls.

- Some people can justify an upfront cost easier than a larger monthly recurring fee. Also, in the long run, you will be out more money with a USB dongle. In the first year alone, you will be at $650 for the USB dongle and $490 for a 3G iPad.

- Can't really dispute this one. I agree. A USB port (like on the MacBook Air) and SD card port would have been nice.

- It's purpose is a eReader on steroids. At least, that is how I am looking at it. Also, I will use this when a laptop is too bulky and I don't need the power or programs that my laptop provide.

- I'll wait this one out. However, of all the Apple products I have and have had over the years, my rate of failure (or just general problems) have been virtually nothing compared to my Windows based counterpart products. Additionally, as electronics get more and more complex, the rate of failure increases, so you may see what you are experiencing more than you did 15 - 20 years ago.

Today is probably the worst day to post something like that.

Sent from my iPad

Point proven? I think so.

Also lou I appreciate the rebuttal however, you could technicaly have an iPad, iPhone, or just about anything electronic to a much bigger screen with the right equipment. It's like take Nintendo for example, they come out with a DS with a screen 2x bigger and call it XL. No one freaks out about that because they call it what it really is. A big DS.

Also my purpose of this thread isn't for current iPad users to come in gloat, rather a place for people to give more interesting reasons (such as Netflix and the remote desktop thing they have on the front page right now is cool) as well as a place for other Apple fans that fall in the same boat as me somewhere to see that more people have the same idea. Besides lou you really dont rebut my concerns about software rather hardware and form factor.

Actually, there are plenty of things you can do on an iPad that you can't on an iPhone simply by virtue of having way more screen real estate. It's like saying that a 9-inch netbook is functionality identical to a 17-inch laptop. Perhaps true on some level, but not at all indicative of actual usability. Unlike the DS, which surrounds a couple of small screens with a bunch of input devices, the iPad itself IS the input. Increasing the screen size increases the interface potential.

Would you have been happier if they called it an iPod Touch XL?

As gloss said, a bigger screen allows for much more usability. There are only so many things you can put on the screen of an iPhone or Touch due to the screen size. Whereas, the iPad has a lot more real estate and will allow much more functionality. That elements app looks amazing! That could not be usable on an iPhone, IMO.

I think the potential of the apps alone will make this far better than the iPhone/Touch device.

Also, you did not address my other rebuttals. ;)

Lame

We all make choices. You don't have to justify your choice to all of us. And, you sure as hell don't need to try and convince other people that they have made the wrong choice.

Do us all a favor and go post something on the Xbox360 message boards at IGN about how much you want to waggle your limbs to project natal or something.

We really don't want to hear it. The people that are all here that are your intended audience know very well what they are purchasing and have already decided whether it is the right product for them or not.

The most compelling thing about the iPad is not necessarily the hardware but more so in what the app developers will do to make an incredible experience that cannot be had anywhere else.

My man reason for getting it even though I have an iPhone, is for internet at the station. After 1/2 an hour the iPhone screen starts to drive you crazy.

Because if you already have a laptop and a smartphone, who wants to carry around some mutated offspring of the two? It can't do everything a laptop does, or that a smart phone does, so the ipad seems like the best waste of money to come about in a good long while.

I think most people will use the data plan on a 'as needed' basis. Who is going to pay the regular monthly data plan on the iPad as well as their internet fees for home use unless you've got it like that!

While I agree with some that the bigger screen allows for more practical usage, what kills it for me is the fact that I just can't even figure out how I would carry something like this around - nor would I want to.

Are you going to literally drag around a laptop sized notebook JUST to carry your iPad? It's not exactly like it fits in a pocket or on a belt clip.

When I think of this product it just seems like something that's meant to be used on your living room couch, but it costs you 4x as much as a netbook would that has more features and if you get top model you're just a hair under $1000 so why not just get a laptop?

For the most part I agree with XboxEvolved that the person that wants this really just wants it to want it because frankly it's just not practical to take around OUTSIDE of the house.

If it was cheaper (like 50% cheaper) then I wouldn't mind getting one for the coffee table because I do understand that sometimes you just want to surf the web while you're watching TV without whipping out a laptop. But at $500 minimum to browse the web when you can't even view sites in flash or multitask is a bit excessive and the only people that can actually be happy with something so limited and expensive are people who just frankly don't use their computers for anything anyway so getting an iPad to them is not actually losing features since all they do is surf the same 12 sites and chat over Facebook.

why would you waste your time with this thread? your only convincing yourself, everybody else here is smart.

Quit feeding trolls. It was obvious as soon as OP assumed everyone would buy on a credit card they wouldn't pay off ("Right now the only person needing to buy this then is the complete Apple faithful that love destroying their credit so something only they give a **** about on their block can be their pride and joy. ")

To me, the iPad is not something you 'carry around' -- that is what the iPhone is for. Which is why I have no interest in the 3G version. The iPad is more for relaxing sitting at the couch when you don't want/need to be in front of a computer anymore. Currently I use an iPhone for that, but the small screen is annoying in that context and the portability and phone features are unneeded in that context as well. Laptops are also unwieldy, overkill, and too expensive (for a decent one) for that type of use.

That is limited thinking. The Ipad is for whatever use the user has, within the devices' capability. For instance commuters who want to read on the way to work the latest WSJ or NYT info. There are alot of disposed of newspapers at Grand Central Station every morning, so the commuter could ditch the news paper if they chose. Other commuters could catch up on movies or TV shows on the way home. An there is always the book store.

I'm typing on my iPad right now and just holding it and staring at it's beautiful screen is enough for me....and i was one of the "iPad is an oversized iPod touch" people. Yea hardware wise it is essential that, but the screen size make it so much more. Just wait until more iPad apps come out and 4.0 with multitasking. I will use this for most of my daily needs and use my laptop for heavy duty stuff.

Now that i have had a chance to use this i really think this is the future.

Btw I typed all this at the same speed i would on a physical keyboard in landscape mode. Keyboard is AWSOME!!!
