I'll just do a counter argument on the whole $130 extra for 3G + GPS.

When you go to Dell, Lenovo, HP or some other OEM you get the same pricing. Go ahead, go on HP and try to configure an HP laptop with 3G (No GPS) and you will see the price is $100. Same with Dell, and others. Why so high when the components are cheap? Well, because not only do you pay for components, but you have to pay licensing fees for all patents related to the 3G, GSM, EDGE, and GPRS technologies. Also, you have to pay more patent fees on the algorithms used to connect the Communications board to the iPad itself. No, not the drivers, but the really hard-coded code. On top of that, you need to pay for all other fees related to GPS technologies.

So once you think of it, paying $130 is a bargain.

None of those are reasons for me not to buy an iPad now.

Most of them are pretty stupid.

That being said, I have not bought an iPad yet.

Thanks for posting your blog here though.

That is limited thinking. The Ipad is for whatever use the user has, within the devices' capability. For instance commuters who want to read on the way to work the latest WSJ or NYT info. There are alot of disposed of newspapers at Grand Central Station every morning, so the commuter could ditch the news paper if they chose. Other commuters could catch up on movies or TV shows on the way home. An there is always the book store.

I'm not saying it can't be used that way, but not by me. First of all I don't commute, and if I did I would be using my iPhone in that situation, which fits in my pocket.

If you want 3G, by all means go for it. That's why it's an option.

Why is it negative that it's kinda like a big iPod Touch. That's a positive thing! Imagine all the things you couldn't do on the iPod Touch because the screen was too small, now you can!

Next to that, the iPhone OS has proven it self.

I think the price is pretty good. I would like to see all models $100 less, however, and then I would consider that the sweet spot. It's a new piece of tech, so what do you expect?

Reliability... I doubt this is an issue.

Purpose? A great handy tool built for the browsing the web ANYWHERE. How can you not see that?

Do I want or need one? Not really, but I think there are definitely reasons TO buy it, as it has a purpose.

The lack of a camera wasn't due to cost, it was due to a software conflict. The second gen will have a camera, it's aimed at the end of the year sometime but my guess is it'll be pushed back.

I'm an IT manager of a company with over 250 users. I bought the iPad because at the end of a 12 hour day, I don't want to come home and tweak my own equipment just to browse the web or IM my friends. Sure I could have bought a netbook, in fact I owned a aspire one, then an Hp mini.

I found that I spent more time having to tweak this and that every night that I did not even bother bringing it out. Not to mention the screens were horrible if I wanted to read something. Laying in bed trying to type? I keep getting pissed that the mouse would 'click' something every key stroke.

You sure about that? I would say (almost) everyone here is a blind apple consumerist, especially those who bought an ipad already.

I bought an iPad, but I have a droid and a Dell studio laptop. So your argument doesn't really hold up. And I use zune, but just got a nano to have a single music program forth ipad and media player.

Unreal, wish my post addressing people like the OP hadn't been deleted. The bigger question here is... why are you on an Apple fan site in an iPad forum posting why NOT to get an iPad? Seriously, why are you here? Maybe I should go to an Xbox forum and post how great my PS3 is and why everyone in the world should buy an iPad.

There are lots of things in the world I don't care for, I devote ZERO seconds of my life to posting in forums about things I don't like. Wow people... really?

ash =o)

When I think of this product it just seems like something that's meant to be used on your living room couch, but it costs you 4x as much as a netbook would that has more features and if you get top model you're just a hair under $1000 so why not just get a laptop?
If it was cheaper (like 50% cheaper) then I wouldn't mind getting one for the coffee table because I do understand that sometimes you just want to surf the web while you're watching TV without whipping out a laptop. But at $500 minimum to browse the web when you can't even view sites in flash or multitask is a bit excessive and the only people that can actually be happy with something so limited and expensive are people who just frankly don't use their computers for anything anyway so getting an iPad to them is not actually losing features since all they do is surf the same 12 sites and chat over Facebook.

You don't understand Apple and how they think. Wayne Gretzky said "I skate to where the puck is going, not to where it's been"

Most of the people who complain about iPad are thinking from a current or old mentality. Apple took out floppies and people flipped, they took out the cd rom from the MacBook air and people flipped. I don't remember the last time I personally even used a cd. Look at the iPhone. I remember people saying "pff no keyboard" now look at all the best cellphones.....

You are thinking way too much of the iPad as a full computer, which steve jobs says it's not. You also didn't mention ONE think the iPad could do that a net book or a laptop couldn't. There is NO portable device out there that let's me play a game with motion control. There is no device out there that let's me read full color magazines and flip through the pages with my finger. There is no other device that allows people to be fully immersed in the content without being distracted.

The iPad not only works reliably, it runs better battery than any laptop I've seen.

This is not a laptop, it's not a smartphone, it's a new paradigm of device.

You are also forgetting a huge majority of the world who are children and seniors who just want to point and go to something. No viruses, no crashing, no defragmentation. Nothing. Just turn on and work.

I stopped by the apple store yesterday and you could see people of ALL ages enjoying it. That's why Apple succeeds.

Since they are pumping a million of anything out at a time now, of course more mistakes happen in the beginning of processing only natual, so dead pixels, brown screens, stuff over heating etc will cause you a lot of headache.

How dare you?! It's yellow!

It doesn't have a camera?

OH HOW MY WALLS WILL COME CRASHING DOWN NOW!!! AHHH

Oh wait, I have an iPhone that has a camera.

So how will your iPhone save you under the rubble? GPS, email OK? Still have hands?

You should have seen what was going on yesterday! I only said "Enjoy your iPad" a couple of times with a few valid points and got banned for a day! :)

Anyway, now Macrumors is getting flooded with these points...

What is the point of this thread? I bought one yesterday and will buy one next year and the following year. I get to enjoy it now and enjoy the new features when they are released. The iPad is not a computer and won't depreciate like a computer. Resale value will be high.

I'm all for opinions like this...I read what you had to say but the truth of the matter is:

A. You don't have an iPad

2. Your logic with money is retarded. Saving 80 dollars initially on the 3G feature in order to buy a USB dongle so that you can spend 20 dollars more per a month= savings "in the long run"??? Really? Not only can you NOT hook a USB device up to an iPad but you'd spend the savings in 4 months if you could and would have something hanging off of your iPad only to spend more. That whole statement right there pretty much sums up the whole argument. Such a strong opinion for a product and its cost with no research or understanding of the product or money in general

D. It does have a purpose...for me right now it's browsing the Internet. In a few minutes it will be a plants vs zombies player for my girlfriend and later I'll be managing my bay sales.

Seriously people need to get over it...if you have so many probs with it stop caring and reading and making posts like this one all about it. It's not for you, I understand. The giant iPod touch thing seemed like a decent description at first but reading about it for a while, and seeing it in use then finally getting one...it's not a good description. It's a lot nicer and I dont even think I'll use it for music.

It was 499 dollars...this isn't a bank breaker or a car or a long term investment...it's an iPad...and it's pretty damn cool.

You've summed it up greatly. A lot of people didn't like the iPod touch when it came out because it was just "a stripped down version of iPhone". Look at it's success today, 1 in 2 people in my school have one. Same thing will happen with iPad (not necessarily that much success), once devs start rolling out some essential apps.

OP, just because you're not getting one doesn't mean the device or it's adopters are bad, it just means your not getting one. Get over it.
