why not gmail

i have a question -

if apple worked with google to get google maps working on the iPhone, why involve yahoo to get push e-mail working on the iPhone, why did they not use gmail instead, surely they would have tried to minimize the amount of companies/people that knew about the iPhone.
 
I would also like to see Apple incorperate a G-mail client into the iPhone. G-mail is by far the best free online e-mail server out.
 
Widgets people.. widgets.. not to mention you have a web browser on your phone. Not a WAP.. a WEB browser...

is there something that says they are working with yahoo??
 
That is a good question, probably because GMail is POP (so isn't push email). Though I imagine POP is supported so it will be supported as well ;).
 
I suppose it could have something to do with the existing AT&T/Yahoo! relationship in broadband services. But yes, I'd certainly rather have Gmail.

Pop is supported, at least thats what steve jobs said in Macworld, its a shame gmail isn't push.

you're correct.
since the backend for the preview/text voicemail is being provided by AT&T, they probably pushed for Yahoo! since they have an agreement with them already from the SBC/Yahoo! DSL...

but i wonder if you could configure the mail client for Gmail?
 
I wonder if Google Gears will work on the iPhones version of Safari? If it does, its game over.

Is there one that you can pay for that is better? :p

I don't think that i would pay for an email service no matter how good it is, gmail is more than good enough for me.

Ditto... I know you'll be able to view gmail but I wish it was push.

Might want to watch it again ... Steve said that they have partnered up with Yahoo to provide push email for Yahoo users.

Its been a while since I watched it, iirc it was right before or after the mentions about google maps.

also remember that, he makes it kind of sound like a big deal that yahoo is partnered with them to make it push mail

im sorry i didnt read others posts, but like for other phones, google will probly let you download the gmail app from their website. you dl it from ure phone and there it is, sitting eagerly to be used :apple:

So does that mean if you currently have a Yahoo mail account, you'll be able to use that one on the iphone w/free push?

OR

Will they make you sign up for a completely different XXX.com mail address?

So let me get this straight -- when I get the iPhone I won't get my gmail mail on my phone when I'm on the road

You will, it will just be that it has to connect to the server everytime it checks for mail, as opposed to the server automatically sending the email to you when it comes in. It's a nice feature that gets used on my company's blackberries and is refreshingly nice.
Something though that many people haven't considered, is that with email forwarding the way it is, it'd be very easy to set up a Gmail account to forward everything to a yahoo account, it'd push emails to your iPhone, and when you respond, set it up to respond via the gmail account...no one knows the difference except for you.

Isn't that kinda like laundering your emails?
 
Yes, most definitely and not the most efficient, but I'm sure we'll all figure out a way that's easier/more intuitive/more apple'ish.

It would be the same account so no domain change but they will change the backend slightly.
 
.Mac Integration

Any thoughts on .mac integration? It sure would be nice to have .mac mail pushed to the IPhone.

I'm not sure how much easier you can get besides going right around gMail directly and that's not what people want.

I personally have a domain name (firstname@firstnamelastname.com) and I can set any e-mail sent to that domain to forward anywhere, which is currently my gMail account. I plan on changing that to forward to Yahoo instead in order to get push.
