I'll admit it. I have a bad case of MacBook envy, and I'm really not sure why. I bought my 15" 1.5GHz Powerbook G4 with 1.5GB RAM in July, 2005. It has done and continues to do for me everything I could want. Hasn't crashed once, no dead pix, never slows down, and hasn't had a single bug I can think of. Startup time is great, and apps always seem to open very quickly IMO. The keyboard is awesome, speaker quality very nice, battery life quite good, and form terrific.

Why do I want a MacBook so much??? Would I use the built-in iSight? Not really. Glossy screen a plus for me?? Nope - my wife's Dell 700 has one and I am sick of it. Do I need the speed? No. Everything I do, my PB handles as quickly as I want. The exception is perhaps Photoshop, which will be even slower on a MB. Do I just need the latest. No, those video Ipods don't appeal to me in the least - I prefer the form of my orginial 40GB Ipod Photo.

Still I want a MacBook. Black or white, doesn't matter. Anyway, I don't have the heart to sell my PB for cheap, so there's no MB in my future. I'm gonna save my $$ and buy a 23" iMac with Leopard. Okay, 20" will do if 23" iMacs aren't out by the time Leopard ships. Still I want a MacBook. Any other PB owners out there going through the same? Damn marketing .

It's 'cause we spend too much time here on MR. Reading thread after thread and viewing photo after photo of these new machines.

Seriously. I went through this w/ every update since I've joined MR. Just spend a good 4 days away from MR and you're lustfulness will have hopefully fizzled out by then. Usually works for me.

Rocketing through the sky!
I feel you! i bought my 12"pb last summer and im an inch away from buying a mb. If i hear some more positive reviews from macworld etc. I think i might! I gotta pay 300 bucks to extend my warranty in a few months so seeling my pb and adding another lil bit to that 300 will get my the middle range one (seriously 200 more just for black and 20 gb hdd? you can replace the hdd yourself! easily!). And since the new ipods wont be coming out till xmas (apparently) and the PS3 is months away I am very very tempted....

I felt the same way when the intel iMac come out, and the Mac Mini(and i planed to sell my iMac G5 to do it) and when the MacBook came out(to replace my iBook) after waiting a few day i no loner feel the need for the MacBook, or Mac Mini, but in the back of my mind i still want a iMac to replace my iMac G5. But now i plan to wait for Merom and Cornoe, as a new iMac will be great for High School and my iMac will last me.

I know how you feel. I have a rev B 12" 1GHz PowerBook, and it's working ok for me, and I feel like I'm willing to sell anything.....anything.....for a white MacBook right now.

i have pretty much the same setup as the OP. i look at these new machines, and i want one.

then, i ask myself....what will this new machine bring me?

a slight speed bump, an isight camera (which i never will use anyway) front row, and the ability to run windows.

im sorry to say it, but the flexibility of running two OS's natively is a fantastic push for me.

i dont think that is enough for me to trade in the PBG4 though.

i am happy with my machine, and it does everything i want. i may want, it, but i dont NEED it. no way jose!

its like buying a new car every time the new model comes out. absolutely no point and a complete waste of money unless you have a VERY good reason.

i used to be like that with cellphones. i want the latest! but now, i just dont care. gimme a phone that can actually phone people, and do it well. please.

remember, your machine can do everything it could before the macbooks were released. its no different. its all relative; there will always be the better machine.

i really do feel for the people that feel compelled to ditch their old machines and pick up new ones (and actually DO it) just because they arent cutting edge anymore. :(

i don't want to ditch my G4 PB for the MacBook. I want a second Mac as "media center" , to record tv via my eye tv, to let it burn disks, render movies, scan slides while i work/surf on the other machine. i also like that the MB is smaller than my PB and it also seems to be more robust. i don't care if it's cutting edge. but i looks realy good in my view. i just can't really justify 1700 bucks (the configuration i want) for the above mentioned purposes.

no reason to feel "sorry" for me.

when the macbook first came out i felt the same in the way that i really wanted it but didnt really need it. my G4 ibook works fine for me for now so i think ive finally gotten over the feeling of needing the macbook. plus i really dont want to have to deal with all the problems that can occur like overheating and whine.

no, it want you in particular, im just saying there are people like that (who actually do buy machines as soon as they are updated, throwing away their old ones) out there. not directed at you at all, it was just an example.:D

if you can actually think of reasons to get it / it would make your life easier, then thats fine!

I've set a minimum spec that as of yet doesn't exist with any of the portables. As soon as it arrives, I'm ditching the trusty Powerbook for something with more KICK!

I'm also planning on buying a Mac desktop. It's going to be an expensive year. :(

oh, i didn't think you're talking about me. i'm just hoping someone comes up with the one reason that i need to buy the MB. and "impressing the girls" doesn't count. i'm too old for that.:D

so far the fact that thre is no universal Photoshop and no universal MS Office speaks against buying the MB.

In my line of work, I absolutely need a faster computer.. so yep, I definitely need the macbook/macbook pro. In fact I need a quad core mac laptop  The situation I am in right now is most frustating.. I know I need a macbook pro for my music production, etc.. but I also want a macbook! Can't think of a reason to justify two purchases..and explaining that to the wife! :p

same here, february '05 PB 12" doing it's job well, no need for a MacBook.

But I may have an out... my wife's convinced Mac is the way to go, and the deal is she gets my PB when her HP dies, and I get a new laptop.

So... anyone here know how to break a windows laptop? (of course, since it's running XP, it's kinda sorta broken already:D ).

Yes... I'm no better. Materialism feels good. I spent a few minutes configuring a MBP and gear amounting to about $7k. And that was without a MacBook! It's the magnetic latch that lures me.

But I think there's a deeper message here, an underlying naiveté that we are all guilty of. I'm grateful my family has food on the table, and my home is safe and warm, and that I'm loved. The fact that we can spend time, much less money on these products, says a lot. Products which are dust like us.

Well, there is some perspective.

Turn off all the protection and go porn-surfing for a while. Then do some downloading from dodgy w4r3z sites and to finish it off, p2p some software.

That'll stuff it right up.
