Seriously, for those of us not suffering from severe cases of Update Fever™, I see no compelling reason
to go through the hassle of using the new Pwnage Tool and re-installing everything. What's the excitement about?

The disincentives are well-documented, and I consider them to be quite unacceptable:

1. No more built-in tethering via the carrier-file hack (HUGE deal-breaker).

2. Widespread reports of battery issues on 3.1.

3. The bug in which the carrier doesn't show in menu bar.

I've been jailbreaking since FW 1.02, and have done 13 successive jailbreaks up to 3.0.
I'm not going anywhere near 3.1! I can live without stereo Bluetooth and non-destructive
video trimming on my 3gs. Please wake me up when there's a worthwhile firmware update...

I 100% agree with you.

I am waiting... things don't seem stable right now, and a lot of the apps I use aren't functioning on 3.1 yet anyway.

The only interest I have in a 3.1 JB is a general interest in seeing a general purpose JB solution for the 3GS be successful... it means a lot for future possible jailbreaks, which are somewhat unknown at this point.

1. Icon ordering in iTunes
2. Compatibility with some third party apps that won't install on 3.0.1, like Yelp.
3. Copying contact info.
4. Improved Maps performance (tile rendering is faster, smoother)
5. Non-destructive video editing
6. Genius mixes in iPod

I'm waiting for the next killer app that will require 3.1 update (probably an augemented reality one) to upgrade.

For now 3.0 is fine, don't fix what ain't broken.

Only an issue for ATT... my carrier allows tethering, doesn't charge extra either.

3. The bug in which the carrier doesn't show in menu bar.
who cares about that??
only point 2 is an issue, it's not affecting everyone, and there are a bunch of new features that make 3.1 a good upgrade, as already pointed out.

Both Cyntact and MyWi are not working on 3.1 yet, which is enough reason for me to stay put.

I though stereo bluetooth was part of the 3.0 update.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 3GS (White, 32GB): Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7C144 Safari/528.16)

As has been pointed out, there are lots of reasons.

1. Icon arranging in iTunes
2. Field copying in Address Book
3. Movie syncing (back to iPhone) from iPhoto
4. Ability to sync/play AppleTV encoded videos
5. Non-destructive video trimming for MMS
6. Voice control over BT
7. Genius mixes

Lots of compelling reasons to upgrade, AFAIC. ;)

It's been working fairly peachy for me sans the carrier logo thing which I've actually come to like weirdly enough

Why did i do it? No particular reason. Probably curiousity or knowing the fact that I'll have to get a replacement phone soon which is highly likely to come with 3.1...effectively lockIng me out of the jailbrake train anyway

So I guess it was a 'one last time for old times sake' thing. I don't need jailbreak and just bare interested in unlocking purely for resale. So mostly meh for me.

I think I'm going to sit the update out as well. I've seen too many reports of phones freezing up, battery issues, etc. to justify risking the upgrade. The carrier logo thing bothers me too for some odd reason. I'll wait for the next update and hope there are some new features that I really want.

I just upgraded to JB 3.1 and I am glad I did. I see no difference at all in the phone and I get to use the 3.1 new features as well. I am quite happy.

mainly because I was tired of getting that iTunes pop-up "an update is ready for your phone..message"

But I enjoy running the latest firmware on my phone..

I'm asking myself this very question, OP. I patiently waited while the made the 3.1 JB and didn't even care at all about updating. I was in no hurry.

Then the jailbreak just happened to come on my day off so I went for it. I am now living with absolutely horrible battery life.

Did you set it up a a new iPhone? I've upgraded three iPhone 3GSes to 3.1 (the last one was JB3.0 to JB3.1) and haven't had any problems yet, with any of them. I restored all three from old backups, too.

I think a lot of us are a little gun-shy about upgrading because the jailbreak isn't a "sure thing" anymore. If we somehow manage to brick our phones and are forced to get a replacement, there's a good chance that the replacement will be at 3.1 and therefore unable to be jailbroken at this time. Hopefully the dev-team will figure things out and open up the jb to everyone, but until then it's probably best to proceed with caution.

I agree the updates are relatively minor for the majority of users (myself included). i've also been jailbreaking phones since you had to enter in long codes. i'm on 3.0 and don't see much of a reason to upgrade. i'd probably play with the new genius feature, but i've only used the old one a handful of times. none of the other updates really offer anything to me. i do like to keep my phone updated, but since pwnage makes you redo everything (unlike purplerain which was great) it's more of a headache to update firmware especially with such small improvements.

I've restored my iPhone twice to 3.1. The first time, unjailbroken, not from backup. HORRIBLE battery, I mean about 1% per minute. The second, jailbroken from backup of 3.0. Now it gets ~ the same battery as it did.

battery and coma problems is a huge deal to me. i use my phone a lot, if battery cannot hold up or if my phone likes to stay asleep and need hard reset, it is a big hassle.

Help! Never Update to 3.1

:(:eek::(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:confused::confused:
I have iphone 3G. i updated 3.1 from I tunes as i have an account.after the the installation my mobile is on the emergency call only. i tried to to switch on the mobile while i hold the the home button on the i tunes. the message i got is that The sim card inserted in this i phone doesnt appear to be supported. even though i have been using this sim card for more than 3 months. plz advise me.

I was apprehensive too, but...

...I went ahead and restored my 3.0.1 3G with the pwned 3.1 ipsw and I've had no problems other than the aforementioned missing carrier name (which was fixed by using MakeItMine). One other cosmetic issue was that some of my icons did not take on the Illumine theme version. Reloading those apps from iTunes has resolved that.

Battery life is the same for me in 3.1 as it was in 3.0.1, which was acceptable. A fully charged phone at bedtime and I wake up to 97% battery 7 hours later.

So far I'm enjoying the genius mix on the phone and the icon arranging in iTunes. What I thought was going to be a pretty useless update has turned out to be better than I imagined. PLUS, I get Yelp! back on my phone.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to JB now so we can get a 3.1 ECID SHSH on file with Cydia?
