I gave 3.1 a go with a jailbroken ipsw and unlocked it. I got a blank carrier. which was a little annoying but sorted it via a plist edit, also having an issue where if my handset is turned off the apn details for my carrier get wiped everytime I may be going back to 3.0.1 within less than 24 hrs of 3.1 being put on

The blank carrier is a simple fix. You need iFile app to do it right from the iphone. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/798473/

Trying to help a windows user out and want to make sure I have this right (his 3GS is jailbroken at 3.0.1). If I give him a copy of the custom ipsw I created on my Mac using pwnage, all he has to do is connect his iphone to his computer, do a shift+restore in iTunes, select the ipsw I gave him and let it do its thing. That's it, right? He will be then be prompted to set it up as a new phone or from backup (I chose restore from backup). Sound right?

Can anyone confirm that this is the correct procedure to update a 3GS from 3.0.1jb to 3.1jb on Windows? I'm pretty sure it is but I'm just a bit confused about recovery mode. I followed the tutorial on iclarified to do the update on my Mac and it worked great, but it did have me go into recovery mode and I'm not sure why. It seems like that step isn't necessary on Windows but maybe it wasn't necessary on my Mac either.

Should follow the exact instructions as on the Mac but you need to create the IPSW on the mac and then do all the iTunes stuff on windows.

Are you sure? In this same thread, SFC Archer says that you do not need to go into recovery mode in order to restore to the custome IPSW. I'm just trying to verify if that part is necessary.

Recovery of DFU? If the device has never been jailbroken you go into DFU if it has you go into Recovery.

Also, it isn't going to ruin anything if you do either of these things. Worst case would be iTunes won't let you install a custom firmware.

This is directly from the tutorial I followed on iclarified:

Step Nine
Make sure your iPhone is connected to the computer then follow these instructions to put your iPhone into recovery mode.

When done correctly your iPhone will display an image of the iTunes logo and a usb cable. iTunes will also pop-up saying it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.

Like I said though, SFC Archer said that you don't have to go into recovery mode - just do a Shift+restore and choose the custom ipsw in iTunes.

Did you try it? Like I said... Worst case it won't let you select an IPSW. All you have to do is try without recovery and if it doesn't work try it with.

I'm just trying to help a friend out (my phone has already been updated to the 3.1jb on my Mac), so I'll have him give it a shot.
