You might want to think about a nas to store files on. I bought a 2 tb wd mybook live earlier this week and on a gigabit ethernet connection its been pretty much flawless. I can access my files easily on any pc in the house and i don't have to keep my pc running to watch shows or movies downloaded to it. It seems to work well with the atv flash and xbmc, so for sake of simplicity thats the route i'd take.

I second this. First of all, it's always a plus not having to have the computer running. Second of all, you can also use it as a backup drive. And last but not least - it's a lot easier to access in XBMC ;)

I third this. I used a 1tb wd drive attached to my aebs via a USB hub and xbmc works perfectly with it.

I forth it!
I have a Synology NAS with all my multimedia on. I use my AppleTV to stream all my content down to my main TV without having to have my MacBook switched on at all.
Check my videos on YouTube (link in sig) for how I actually set this up, and also on getting XBMC on your AppleTV as well (although you don't have to jailbreak to stream movies down to the apple tv).

wow, ive been thinking of getting an aTV and wondering about the jailbreaking, this was really helpful.
i have a question though, i read this thing about installing Mac OS on an AppleTv, can anyone expand on that, like if its any good at all?

can you...

I'm still pondering in getting an Apple TV and jailbreak it. Just a few questions before I do.

Can you:

1) watch flash-based livestreams like twitch.tv? How's the resolution? I hope it's not limited to 240p.

2) flawlessly stream (from NAS, over wifi) 1080p .TS and .TP files using XBMC?

3) play 720p .mkv files using XBMC?

4) still use airplay mirroring even if your Apple TV is jailbroken?

Yes on #4

I thought the new 1080p Apple TV (ATV3) wasn't jailbreakable... or have I missed some announcement saying it's been done whilst on vacation?

new to the JB, but not the mac community. I have 2 ATV2's running 4.2.1. Should I keep them and JB at the 4.2.1 software or upgrade and then JB (if that's even possible). I have seas0npass downloaded but it's still validating IPSW for a while and in the preferences it shows AppleTV2,1_5.0_9B179b. Is this going to work, or do I need to find a seas0npass download with the 4.2.1 FW version?

You can't JB the older firmware unless you have your SHSHs saved.

at this point all you can do is to update to the most recent firmware and jailbreak there, at this point the jailbreak is tethered only.

thanks so much for that info. With regards to seas0npass, it took a while to download but then error'd on the filesystem verification (or something to that extent). I'll download the latest updates from apple for the ATV2 but any ideas about the seas0npass hurdle?

Are you running into a filesystem patch failed error or something similar?

Forums explain that you should copy the file to your home directory. I tried my desktop and it worked for the jailbreak. I was initially opening the SeasonPass app from a network file share.

Free Hulu without commercial was enough to justify what was $99 prior to the release of new ATV3.

It pretty much pays for itself after a year at $7.99 a month for Hulu Plus subscription.

how are you getting free Hulu without commericals in the aTV2?

Can someone point me to a link where it details out the instructions to attach a network drive?

I also have an Apple TV 2 with an Airport Extreme + an attached drive.

Thanks in advance!

Nfl on Jailbroken apple tv?

I'm thinking about buying a j.b. atv2 but my main use would be to watch non local nfl games. Will the atv2 allow me to watch the games live?

If not it would not be worth the investment.

Are there better options besides paying the huge price tag for nflnetwork?

Thanks for any help, I'm totally new to atv
