It is more expensive because you pay for the quality of this excellent computers that have less problems than pcs,and well the image has also something to do.Macs are worth the price...quality,beauty and easy to use....much more than other computers can offer,no matter how hard they try.And well as we say in Spain "Al final lo barato sale caro",which means:"At the ends what it is cheap ends up being expensive"...you can buy a macintosh that can last 3 or 4 years and you should not have any problems but you can buy a pc an in those 3 or 4 years you would need to buy a new one the second year...SO what is cheaper at the end..having to buy one computer(Macintosh)or having to buy two computers because the quality is bad???

Thats such a good saying , have heared it before and I know its true. I don't buy crap products. Even if that means I have to wait longer before I get it.

That is your philosophy, but just because it supports your pro-Macintosh viewpoint does not mean it is the right one.

You don't buy crap products? Who cares, for the price of a Macbook Pro one can buy 3 bottom of the barrel Dells. Sure they die whenever the Queen sneezes but hey, 4 year down the road when your MacBook Pro is on its final legs even the $1000 Dell of that day will be twice as fast as your previous top of the line laptop.

Me myself? I sell and rebuy a new MacBook Pro each update, so this saying does not apply to me at all. But if Apple does offer more configurable options and easy access drive bays *perhaps* I might actually get more useful life out of my machines.

Unlike you, I don't work around my Macs, I want my Macs to work around me, and as it is Macs are really crimping my style and usage patterns.

Don't get me wrong, I love Macs but I am full aware that they are more hype than what Apple is trying to make them out to be. Perhaps you should actually learn to think different?

Oh and by the way to that poster who was inquiring about how Vista is treating some Windows supports, well lemme turn back the same question to you. How is LEOPARD working out for you?

An OS that is released with poor enough exception handling that it deletes files moved to a disconnected network share... well all I see is it causes tons of KPs on my workmate's new machines and while it does look very flashy (much like Vista is flashy) perhaps it is indeed, like what everyone calls it, the next Vista.

I was not talking about computers, I have a windows machine now and it didnt give me huge problems. I was talking about other products , like a 10 dollar mp3 player versus an iPod or a zune.

I havent read any of the posts as its 5 pages  but they really arent i cant find any good 13" laptops for less than 750 which is what i paid for my 2.2sr 2gb mb

No problem , I only started this topic to see what other people opinions are. Not to get all serious about wether we hate windows or mac..

just opinions on this. and thanks for yours

I've got a Macbook. I don't really do anything differently from the way I did with my Gateways. The main differences are that this costs more, looks nicer, and runs OS X. Torrenting and video play pale in comparison to how they were on Windows, while security and eye candy are improved. Overall, it's a decent computer. But if I were buying again, I'd probably get a Thinkpad or another Gateway. OS X is nice, but the perks aren't enough for me to consistently pay more for the same hardware and performance. I don't know. Maybe I'll feel differently in a few months. It's a perfectly usable computer. I just think it's overpriced. I paid $1000 for a computer that normally goes for $1300. I don't think I'd pay more than $800 for another one. Maybe not even that much.

I can't imagine any technical reason why mac hardware would be slower at "torrenting" than any other computer.

When I look at the MacBook in Europa , its 881 euro ex. VAT or something. ( 1049 with VAT. ) It has 1 GB Ram , Intel Core2Duo , 80 GB HDD. I can get a Windows Laptop with intel Core2Duo , 2 GB Ram , 120 GB HDD for 600 euro INC VAT!. For obvious reasons I love the Macbook and will always get it over the windows machine at any price. ( Just a much longer wait before I can get it ).

But why is it a bit more expansive? Is it Mac OS X ? Thats a good reason.
Is it more beautifull? Obviously. What do you think?

I think you just answered your own question. They charge that amount because that is what consumers are willing to pay. The will produce where mr=mc in order to maximize benefit and achieve an efficient outcome. Basic economics.

It's not a hardware flaw, but a paucity of design. There are no good torrenting clients for OS X. The end result is that doing things like playing videos or using bittorrent on a Mac is far less practical than doing so on Windows. An alternative would be to boot into XP to do so, but in that case, it would make far more sense to get a dedicated Windows machine (and pay much less in the process).

Long Answer:
I'm don't understand this question, because you can only compare like with like. Apple is a hardware and software company which really drives innovation and has brought to market some exciting technologies, like QuickTime and Zero Configuration Wireless Networking (Bonjour).

You can't compare this with a PC OEM who bolts together components in boxes (The PC OEMs still have to include an OS, but they get reasonably good deals (I'll explain why in a moment), although a couple (ASUS being one) have complained about the high cost of Vista). Of course Apple with have bigger overheads — they do more!

Mac OS X has cost Apple a lot of money. If you include the price it cost to buy NeXT and then add the figure NeXT spent making the OS, then total up the cost Apple spent developing the original Mac OS from versions 1-9 you could probably quiet easily run up a bill for a couple of billion.

Windows probably cost a similar amount (if not more, but Microsoft not only is dealing with huge economies of scale, they also have heafty profits from corporate clients and businesses).

Apple has traditionally sold to science, arts, education, consumer markets etc. so don't have as many of these volume licences which are effectively cash cows.

Just because Leopard is priced at $129 does not mean that's how much the OS costs to develop. If Apple licensed their OS to other manufacturers they would have to charge way more than Microsoft.

Short Answer:
It's the software, stupid!

Excellent Answer, I agree.

Dare I say it?
