As soon as a 16GB is available, the next day it is gone. However everyday I can buy a 8GB M1 MBP, MBA or Mac mini no problem.

Apple should really make more 16gb M1 versions as there are too many 8gb M1 in stock.

I might have to consider getting a 8gb Mac Mini for Xmas instead of 16gb version maybe.

And I bet you they are doing that, just gonna take some time to actually ship worldwide.
They most likely miscalculated the split between 8 and 16GB by just a few %.

Many users are going to try the this new M1 laptops and they would probably choose 8GB over the 16GB to see what it is like. Some would decide to keep it or some would decide to upgrade. I think that is why you find 8GB more than 16GB.

Will be too late. Online is next year. I am hoping to get one for Xmas but no success for weeks.

Honestly, it probably would've been shipped or close to shipping already if you just ordered online weeks ago and waited.

The 8GB are their retail models readily available at Best Buy, Costco, etc.

The 16GB are likely made to order hence limited availability.

check the apple store app every morning around 6 am. The 16/1tb pop up. Thats how I got mine.
In my experience you need to keep checking throughout the day. I've seen them pop up later on as well -- I'd actually ordered my MBP 16/1 from an area store in the morning, then after lunch saw one show up for a closer store with lower sales tax. Ordered that one then cancelled the other order.

Buy the 8gb Mini today so you will get it for Xmas and also order the 16gb version online. This was you can evaluate the 8gb version now and see if it suites your needs. Then you can decide to cancel the 16gb order or keep it and return the 8gb model.

Right... like everyone has around $2,000USD+ to go throwing around, for both an 8Gb AND 16Gb model. My wife bought (ordered) mine on Nov. 13th. It was shipped from "CHY-NAH" (as Trump would say it) on Nov. 30th. Arrived Dec. 7th. Expect a similar timeline. Just the way thing are.

I have the 8GB mini and it's fantastic. World of Warcraft even runs great on it. It's way faster than I expected it to be with 8GB.

People have not yet adjusted to the difference between these new Macs and the old Intel versions.
16gb does make a difference if you play games in CrossOver, but I agree that 8gbs functions better than what many people expected. Personally, I picked 16gbs because I don't upgrade my machines that often (this machine replaces a machine from 2011). For most cases for people who bought the 8gbs, even if it was because of the limited availability of the 16, they're probably going to be happy with their machines.

I also was surprised at how fast and snappy the 8GB M1 is - then I started looking at Utility Monitor and noticed that the AS versions of a LOT of applications are showing up smaller in RAM. THAT was really surprising, and makes me think that there are architectural differences in the Apple Silicon compilers that are making the programs smaller.

I am not going to bash on the 8GB as its proved to be more than capable with the M1 chip but truly if you are buying for the long term I think people would be better getting the 16GB. I think the same can be said for the storage as well. Just my view...I have ordered the Mac mini 16GB 2TB and have to wait till the end of Jan but Its worth it.

I think you misunderstood the suggestion -- as I read it, the suggestion was for OP to end up with just one model. Whether @UBS28 kept the 8GB and cancelled the 16, or returned the 8 and waited for the 16 would depend on the results of testing out the 8.

I bought a base M1 MBP as a dedicated work machine for a new contract. The first time since the 2012 MBP non-retina (which was user upgradable) that I bought a base machine. Works sufficiently well.

Well, as long as the credit card isn't charged for the 16Gb, until shipped, I guess you're only really buying the 8Gb for the time being.

To my knowledge, only Apple has the 16GB models. Best Buy doesn't even list any 16GB configs on their website, and I believe that also applies to Costco. Those BTO configurations are probably coming direct from the production facilities, which will cause delays in shipping because of the extra COVID protocols for packages coming from SE Asia.
