I wonder if Sidebar is now a universal standalone app/module that uses a CASE structure or similar to decide what it will display and do based on the app that calls it. Or something like that. This is how it feels to me across all apps in iPadOS at least. Perhaos this app quits when memory constraints demand, which would at least explain why iPadOS Safari sidebar seems to have sudden bouts of Alzheimer’s once in a while.

All speculation on my part but the overall feeling is that Apple have opened Pandora‘s box here, know it’s broken and either don’t care or simply don’t have the programming chops to be able to fix it. Either way it’s bad juju.

Yes. Apparently this article, to be specific:

This isn’t just for iOS, though, as it applies to macOS and iPadOS. From what I’ve been told in a couple Twitter replies when this change was first implemented, the Safari team was actually BEHIND in being compliant, and that’s why the change was made mid-cycle. So it looks like something was half-a$$ed last minute because they had to. This all started when Safari’s SideBar was change to run up to the top of the app itself as opposed to staying in the frame of the app, like where the page itself is displayed.
