My answer - I was born in the U.S., meaning I was born into the U.S. system and know it best. 60 is cool (my personal favorite temp range), 75 is warm and 90 is hot. Also, while Celsius is more common, Fahrenheit is more accurate, about twice so considering it uses around twice the degrees to describe how hot something is, plus 32. It's worked for me so far, but I understand thinking of it as an inferior measurement of temperature :3

Why do we need to all be on the same bus? What happened to the wonderful wonderfulness of diversity?

Because components are no longer completely created in one country. Almost everything is comprised of parts from all over the world. Not having one standard makes things more expensive and difficult. As others have pointed out, try and do any automotive work on an American vehicle, let's see how far you can get without having both SAE and Metric tools. I'll start by taking away your 10mm socket/wrench...

Parts stores (even home depot/lowes) have to stock both types of bolts and sockets, both types of wrenches and sockets, it really is a PITA...

I am an American who grew up as an Expat.

Also an American, who uses F now, but I grew up using C. Yes, F has smaller increments, but C is easier to use because the freezing and boiling point of water is easier to understand (0 C - 100 C vs 32 F - 212 F). Since the boiling and freezing point of water is typically the gold standard of discussion of temperatures, as much as we love F, C is better. It is easier to comprehend a range divided by 100 units, vs 180 units.

We are just used to using F, but it isn't better...

If you're in a software environment, you check the locale setting from the operating system or application software configuration and adjust various things accordingly (dates, language, currency, comma preference, etc.).

The comment I responded to was about what "software developers prefer", not how they do their job. Hardly my fault that the wording in what I responded to mentioned preference.
So as a developer you’d prefer the ISO format and ideally stored as UTC as then conversion to locale settings is automatic and without fault.

Why not just say you agree then. Absolutely fine as a human to prefer whatever format you like, but as developer that wouldn’t be smart.

Again - the comment I responded to said "prefer".

Here's a thought - it seems like it would be WAY MORE IMPORTANT AND USEFUL if everyone used the SAME LANGUAGE than the same measurement system. I mean, think about the huge time and expense totally wasted on translating things from one language to another. It's outrageous and ridiculous!

So where is the push to pick a language, any language and ban all others?

Don't get started on "Esperanto". It was made up and a total failure. May as well go with Klingon if you're just going to make something up.

I propose we all learn Mandarin and imprison everyone who doesn't speak it and write after being given 2 years to learn it!

While we're at it - we should all be up in arms about the few countries that drive on the left side of the road. They should all be forced to convert to right-side driving, and become one with the rest of us. Time to stop wasting money designing vehicles for right and left sided driving and just design them all for right sided driving!!!

No wasn't ignored because it's not 'Americans', don't be silly with your insinuations please. yyyymmdd format is a logical reverse notation that is perfect for sorting dates. So very useful in for example file names or tables.

I see anti-American sentiments literally ALL the time on forums and social media, even by Americans themselves. Little stabs like "Americans and their backwards ways," "Only in America," etc. while the same things in other countries go unmentioned as if they don't exist. It gets old. I definitely sense that from many posts here.

I never said yyyymmdd wasn't logical. I'm saying they're ALL logical--just different ways of expressing the same thing. Just because x amount of people do something a certain way doesn't make it "better" or "right." You can also use more than one format depending on the context.

Don't you know? America SUCKS and should be eliminated from the planet - but be sure to hand over all the money and technology first...especially those NATO resources....and somehow figure out a way to convey that culture of innovation without all of the other crap too! Somehow.

Given that people drove on the left before they started driving on the right (think of stage coach drivers sitting on the right side), then everybody who currently drives on the right should go back to the way it was, and drive on the left, like it should be.

Sitting back to see who rises to the bait...

Nothing "backwards" about it. I find it interesting that I and others who are "defending" the MM/DD/YYYY format here are tolerant of the different formats and recognize them as innocuous differences between countries, whereas people like you are intolerant and belittling over something so petty.

As for "logic," I simply think of it as a hierarchy. The month contains the days, so it comes first. Just like all calendars I've ever seen show it. The month is the heading at the top of the page, and all the days of the month are below it. Since the year changes so seldom comparatively, it doesn't really matter if it comes before or after the month and date (and often the year is never referenced anyway except when required for official documentation).
For the most part, my 'attack' on US measures is about Metric vs Imperial.

I don't particularly care about the date aspect, although I've grown up with Day Month Year, which makes sense in every way except perhaps the 1 example given of expressing it as numerals and performing a sort. Of course - a smart app (ie Excel) can distinguish these dates and order them correctly regardless of how they appear.

Given that people were using non-metric measurements before they were using metric measurements, I guess all those people using metric should go back to the way it was before, eh? They can all pretend they're stage coach drivers too.

LOL. Same here.

I grew up in WV and my wife in IN. Two polar opposites in terms of roads. WV has curvy roads that follow the topography, IN is laid out on a grid.

It took a few years for her to stop grabbing the Oh 💩 handle when I would straighten out the curves a little. :)

I might suggest that you never visit Phoenix, Arizona during the summer. Our high today is 99º and tomorrow will be the first 100º day of the summer. Sunday will be the first 101º day. The summer averages around 108-110º while August runs around 112-119º.

It's a dry heat here, but if 75º is warm to you, you don't want to be here in summer. :)

Hmmm…might get rid of the epidemic of wrong way drivers that plagues Phoenix, just by putting them all on the 'correct' side. ;)

If there's anything Americans hate, it's being told what to do. Just let us be. And sure, people might think America is backwards, but look at the top 10 largest companies in the world by market cap and notice which country they're all from :)

Right, don’t ask questions about us, we got some large mega corporations so let’s pretend that’s somehow an answer to the topic. Got ya.

Large mega corporations provide me with tremendous value. I have few complaints about them.
