He said it will be "an A+ update". He also said they will have aggressive updates that Android won't be able to keep up with.

- Apple will deliver aggressive updates to iPhone that Android/Google won't be able to keep up with

That is good news, but said before phones like the EVO came out. Wonder if he was expecting it?
- iPad is up there with the iPhone and Mac as the most important products Jobs has been a part of

That is what scares me. If he thinks the Ipad is revolutionary, he surely will do some silly upgrade on the Iphone and call it magical.
- Next iPhone coming is an A+ update

Simple rhetoric... What else would he call it? An F? I bet he thought the Iphone 3GS was A+ too....when the stockholders were looking.

- Blu-Ray software is a mess, and Apple will wait until sales really start to take off before implementing it.
Well that's innovative.... How many people need to adopt Blu Ray? There are tons already...Cmon! I thought Apple was supposed to show everyone what technology they need to use and not wait on everyone to show them what technology they use already.

This is the defining point in the iPhone's life, people are crazy to think it won't change. Everyone knows it, even Steve.

I agree with most of the posts here and I don't think it will change much. This is all based on iPhone's history and the iPad's position. We might see a nice little "new" feature that other smartphones don't have yet or hasn't smoothed out yet but in terms of drastic hardware changes, don't hold your breath or you'll get disappointed like after every keynote.

I want to remind you that before the iPad keynote, SJ quoted to the press that the iPad is the most important project he's ever done to put more spin on the excitement. I won't put anymore weight on his words until I see the keynote. And get disappointed again. :D

Nope, I don't hate the iPhone. In fact, I'm a proud Apple fanboy and own an ecosystem of the company's products and love them. I'm just basing this on history of Apple's movements and a dash of skepticism. :)

I'd agree with you 110% if this were ANY other year. But the dynamics of the industry have drastically changed during the last half of 2009 and the first of 2010 so far. I think it's a different ball game this time around and anything can happen. Impossible to say one thing over another definitively.

I'm with you mate and I want Apple to haul ass and give us better iPhones. But it pains me to say that Apple has never really cared much about the competition. Before the iPhone was born, there were already awesome mobile hardware from Nokia. Apple didn't care. They released the iPhone without the App Store, without Copy Paste, without video capture capability. It still earned them millions. They updated to the 3G in baby steps. They earned more millions. The 3GS is a 3G in crack and just added video capture while the competition gained momentum. Still more money. If you see the iPhone growth and profit margins, the rest of the competition are the ones playing catch up. In a tech perspective, we here at MacRumors, Engadget, mobile blogs, and the rest of the tech world have been moaning that Apple needs to step up. This hasn't been a cry after we saw the Nexus One. This cry has always been screamed since the release of the iPhone, oh wait, since the Mac vs PC wars. Apple's profit margin will not go down and will continue to grow whether we scream "we want phones like the Pre... then Nexus One... and now Evo... and so on". Steve Jobs knows what he's doing. And he's doing fine.

We may jump ship. But the iPhone will continue to rise. We jump ship, move on to the Android forums or WinMo 7 etc., and next year, a new set of Macrumors members will have the same threads. The cycle. And the iPhone figures continue to rise as our grandparents and white picket fenced neighbors enjoy their iPhones.

Yeah, that's the problem, it didn't change until around the end of the year. That is too late for Apple to make drastic changes in the new Iphones design. They probably already had the prototype by then. I would not be surprised if they have the protoypes a year in advance. Didn't some Chinese guy die a year ago because he lost a prototype.

Steve Jobs doesn't care about market share. He doesn't care about being the best. He cares more about being the first. :)

I disagree... First is a rarity for Apple. They like to see what consumers like, letting competitors do their market testing, and then perfect what is already out there.

iPod- late to mp3 world
iPad- late to tablet or ereader world
iPhone- not the first touch screen telephone.

Steve Jobs doesn't care about being first... he cares about making MONEY

I dissagree with the original posting. If Apple can't see that thier specs are being put to shame by other manufactures then they deserve to have people dissapointed come this summer. I think they know thier hardware and some parts of their software are behind and will step up. At the same time someone made a good point and said that these phones are developed way before we actually see them. I hope, but I don't know if Steve saw things like the HTC EVO coming when they designed the iPhone 4G. Hopefully I am wrong.

Physically, I can't see the iPhone changing in any way. The front is perfect and the multitouch screen is excellent. I could see the back of the device changing, but the screen size is perfect for everyday use and for the uniformity of the apps to all run on a single screen size, which helps developers create apps that only conform to one screen size/resolution.

What is this hype all about in this thread that the iPhone is losing ground or not?

I mean what can one gain in reality?

To me the iPhone is like a laptop in that it pratically does what my desk top can do.

What more can be gained with a hand held that is a phone and also like a mini lap top?

Marc

About 25% of my email comes with an attachment that's flash supported. I have to go to my lap top to open these attachments. And no, I have never had problems with flash. Big draw back for the iPhone and a big problem for the iPad.

personally i do not see the iphone look/case changing

the first gen iphone that came out was aluminum with a black plastic section - because the radio signals are affected by aluminum

so we saw a switch with the release of the 3G and 3GS. Complete plastic casing to not interfere with signals.

we then head to the iPad 3G, a model which has a large rubber/plastic on the back for the radio. this is aesthetically unpleasing. Why do they have it though? because their entire line up of computers features aluminum. This unifies their product line and brand image.

the iphone is not a computer, it is a phone. therefore, it probably will never be released with an aluminum casing (plus apple already moved away from it in first gen)

apple is not a company to put back ugly black rubber/plastic portion on their iphone case.

sorry, maybe iphone will get a rectangular shape, but it will be composed of plastic.

Or maybe they will develop some sort of metal that doesn't block radio frequencies or have an aluminum back, but the plastic strip to have a different look to it.

It would be awesome if they made an iPhone (Pro?) model out of Titanium. IT doesn't block radio frequencies very badly.

Is the macbook not a computer then? Is the Apple Tv a computer?

Is the macbook not a computer then? Is the Apple Tv a computer?

Yes, but the Macbook is their basic model, their base line product. it is the one that is supposed to appeal to the lower end consumers. thus the name macbook and not macbookPRO. there has to be some differentiation between product lines.

but with the iPad, it is a luxury good, thus the aluminum casing to mach the rest of their luxury products (macbook pro, macpro, imac, mac mini, etc.)

apple tv is made out of aluminum because it is basically built like the mac mini. if you didnt notice, both the mac mini and apple tv have plastic tops, so the wireless radio signal will not be interfered with.

i do not see what your point is?

i just said that aesthetically, apple does not want to put an ugly black rubber section on their iphone, which is why they shifted from it in the 2nd generation.
looking at the macbook, its plastic, meaning they have all the intention of keeping it in their product line.
the ipad is now aluminum, so Apple would seemingly want product differentiation between that and their iPhone/iPod Touch.

keep in mind, this is only my OPINION, and should not be taken for the truth or the coming reality. perhaps i will be wrong and they will switch to some other metal that does not interfere.
