I am pretty excited to see the realize of this new Apple Tablet. But I don't plan on buying it (at least not the first iteration). So then why am I so excited?

First of all I am an Apple tech junkie. I will be excited to see a fun and dazzling piece of hardware even if I don't have it.

Secondly, I can't wait to see the OS to see what Apple has for the future of the iPhone!

The big question about the tablet is if it will run on OS X or iPhone OS. I don't think there's a chance it'll be OS X. It's not made for a touch screen... But I also think that the current iPhone OS as stands is far too simplistic for a tablet. Therefor the most logical thing in my mind is a hybrid between the 2, incorporating data storage, multitasking, expose, video chat, and many more desired features. But I think that iPhone OS will be used as a foundation with many extra's added on. In that regard, I think it's only a matter of time (4.0?) That many, if not all, of these features will be added on to the iPhone.

Basically this tablet is going to further drive innovation for a touchscreen device and the iphone will get as many of features that it can by the trickle- down theory.

What are your thoughts?

Now I'm super pumped about the next iphone. I have the 3GS and plan to sell it as soon as the 4th gen comes along.

I hope you're right. An iphone OS that is a hybrid would be amazing... IF they can somehow increase battery life. If the battery situation stays the same, hell no. Dead in minutes.

I'm very interested to see where the iphone goes from here.:D

Excellent thread

bigger question is

will the tablet be comming out in Sept just as many indicators it's not that it is. keep in mind people like attention as much as company's. I hope it does come out but don't play the los Vegas odds on it. ;)

I think the battery will definitely improve for the next iphone. That's because I don't think they will increase the processing speed. They will most likely increase it every other year thus allowing battery power to catch up with the enhanced speed. the 3gs battery is actually better, but due to the faster processor the battery life is about the same (or in some cases worse). But next year i would assume the battery life to have a nice bump :)

Hey I see that you are in the Air Force? I just joined!! :) I'm going off to officer training school this September!

The battery thing was the first aspect I thought of lol.

Doubling today's battery life (in the same size/format) would be awesome. A 15% increase just doesn't do anything IMO.

As far as tablets go you're seeing them a lot more often on TV (sci-fi shows and such) and while, technically, they're more of a meaningless prop vs an actual tool, people who are watching are being more 'acclimated' to the idea of a tablet based personal computer.

Everyone is saying they are excited for the next iPhone because of the new UI but I bet that apple will allow the new UI on the iPhone 3GS when they release 4.0! but who knows?

Oh I'm sure they will. They will do exactly what they did with this release. Add a lot of features, but the 3gs will only get some of them, the 3g and 2g will get even less

most likely it will run on an iphone OS on steroids!:D

or maybe both OS X and iphone OS:p

or will we see a new OS for the apple tablet????

the thing is, if it runs on both then things get "complicated"

the iphone OS, seems like it would be nothing compared to the apple tablet OS, in terms of size, memory and processing speeds and other good stuff.

Yes that is exactly my point. I think that's exactly what will be on it. And then on 4.0 the iphone will get all the tablet features that it's processor can handle :)

In the past how many weeks before the event does Apple send out an media invite?

Good question. I seem to remember it only being about two weeks or so... But remember the iphone was announced in january and released in june. So even if the tablet is announced in september we could easily still have a january release date...

Has apple officially made an announcement or is this still rumor? I can see certain niche markets where tablet could be useful (medical, architecture, etc fields) I don't see it becoming mainstream...

Nothing official yet AFAIK. Knowing Apple, we won't hear anything until the day it's released.

well unfortunately battery life technology doesn't double every year  it is known to be late to the party. That's why there has been so much focus on energy effeciency over the past few years

My point exactly. Killer battery life would be the real advancement.

While cool and new, the iTablet is just a change in form factor when you get down to it.

Fortunately the form factor allows for a bigger battery. Though it may end up with iPhone numbers anyway, 5usage/12stndby in a day lol.

I'm sure that any Apple tablet would run a touch-optimized MacBook Leopard or Snow Leopard with a virtual keyboard, rather than the iPhone OS.

I really don't see that. Of course I agree that the iPhone OS is far too simplistic for a tablet, that's why I think it will be a hybrid of the two. But I think it will be built off of the iphone OS and be more similar to it. I mean it was MADE for touch, OS X... for a mouse.

OS X would be just like "any other tablet". a new OS designed specifically with touch in mind, is what will win apple the market :)

Well the thing is "standby" time won't really be an issue with a tablet because it won't be using a cellular network. It'll be similar to a macbook's sleep mode, which it usually drains about 5% in a night of 8-9 hours. And I think the usage will be on par with the macbooks as well. I don't think the battery will be as big an issue because you won't use it constantly all day long like you do with a phone.

The "iTablet" is definitely helping Apple.

This vapourware product has meant newspaper technical sections have been full of free advertising for the Apple brand...

the $999 price point may be too high

the Chinese clone makers are going to release their own tablets soon at much lower prices. the iTablet will have to offer a lot more features and value to get the not cult of steve market

iphone is a hit because it's priced the same or less than other comparable cell phones

At $1000 i can buy 2-3 netbooks to take with me

Who said anything about $999? They will definitely offer a cheaper version than that.

If apple is smart they will release a $599 and $699 (6 inch), and a $799 and $899 (10 inch)

Note: I'm only including a 6 inch because the rumors seem to indicate that there will be one. Untill Apple convinces me otherwise I think a 6 inch would be a bad move. too small that it competes with the iphone, and not big enough to not be really useful.
