depending on features i could probably live with a $600 10 inch model. my main use would be to take it on trips when my son gets older for him to play with.

Well considering how a 3.5 inch ipod touch costs $400, I'm not sure if apple will offer a 10 inch (more feature rich) tablet for only $200 more. Especially on it's first iteration. I wouldn't complain if they did... But remember, this is Apple.. :p

netbooks with a 10" screen cost $300. $500 tops if you get blu-ray on it

worst case i can buy a $400 laptop to watch DVD's on the road

Yeah well unfortunately if you are looking for a cheap laptop you are in the wrong forum. Apple doesn't try to competitive pricing. They set the price at whatever they want.

$600 10 inch tablet would be by far the cheapest end of the spectrum, and in my opinion, is unlikely. But on the other hand that's probably about the only way I would buy one :)

A touchscreen tablet computer by Apple is on the way. Visual mock-ups of the hardware itself are all over the internet. The various visual models of the Apple tablet hardware have been available for one’s viewing curiosity far longer than the announcement by Apple of said device. Some of the mock-ups of the Apple Tablet show the device running the Mac OS X—be it Leopard or Snow Leopard. Some of the presumed replicas of the device show it running the iPhone OS, and a few mockups show a third type of Operating System that is a hybrid of both the Mac OS X and the iPhone Operating System.

What exactly will the Operating System (OS) for the newly-announced Apple Tablet computer be? As an iPod touch owner (and heavy user), I hope that the Tablet will run on an OS that is much more complex than the iPhone/iPod touch OS. Do not misunderstand me, I love the iPhone OS. It is revolutionary in its implementation—the iPhone OS reduces elaborate computing processes into a very user-friendly and visually-compelling Operating System/GUI that a few years ago one would have only dreamed would be available for computing devices the size of a mobile telephone.

It is going to be a normal OS X with some visual changes. Why? Because the OS X kernel is SOOO light that it is the EXACT same kernel used in the iPhone (with some small changes for phone requirements)

I think the specs will be similar to the first gen air. The first gen will not be impressive, however, just like the air, it will grow and become AMAZING.

Just my 2 cents, but I could always be wrong.

I still say

it's gonna be a while before it comes out at least a year maybe two but we can hope and dream but all the sources I trust say not in Sept. I see allot of photoshop stuff out there. Not sure the source and why other then attention. but a few more weeks and we will know at least Sept story. I don't even think they will bring it up. some touch news, maybe lower some prices, hopefully release 3.1 make some back to school deal announcements and I think they will call it a day.

Hey I see that you are in the Air Force? I just joined!! :) I'm going off to officer training school this September!

Congrads on joining the ranks:) One thing to always remember that they will not tell you in officer training: Always always listen to your senior NCOs!! They know the system and how to get things done. Do that and you will be a successful officer and not one that your troops will want to frag!

Thank you, and thanks for the advice!

Also, if the tablet runs iphone OS I think it will be so "computer-like" that Apple will be forced to open up the OS some. The smartphone industry is still new and largely untapped so it is still excusable for Apple to prevent other browser apps, but can you imagine if Apple prevented Firefox from being able to be downloaded on a Mac?! Or if Microsoft wouldn't allow Safari to run on Windows??

My point is that a tablet, no matter how it's marketed, will walk the line so closely with the netbook market that Apple will eventually be forced to loosen up.

The future is in open source...

I am not sure what you mean by the smart phone industry is new, new to Apple or new to the public?

I mean it's a new, exploding industry. As opposed to personal computers. Sure smartphones have been around for awhile, but until about 3 years ago they were obscure. Now that phones are starting to get fully featured OSes, the rules about what they can and can't do are only starting to be drawn. As opposed to PC's which have been in common households for 20 years.

Ok thanks. No jab at you. Just a question. I guess being from New York I see it differently.:D

The iPhone OS isn't much different from Mac OS X... it's just trimmed down and has a GUI that's optimized for a small touchscreen. For the Mac Tablet, I think we'll see an OS with all the functionality and basic look of OS X, but optimized for a large touchscreen. It's going to be marketed more as a computer than media device. Of course, this is Apple so they'll probably end up redefining the tablet/netbook market like they did with MP3 players and smartphones.
