That’s all fine and good, yes (you’re comparing mac to ios) . . . . but it still doesn’t explain why tabs don’t close when clicking the ‘X’ on the ios FF tab bar. To use your analogy, it’s not because of the engine “limitations” - it’s a bells/whistles and outside (the engine) function that other ios based browsers don’t have a problem with.

The odd thing is that it works perfectly fine every time on my 2021 12.9 and Mini 6.

@dockgaze So, my curiosity got the better of me and I decided to install FF on my M1 iPad Pro 11. I opened several tabs, and they all closed no problem. I tested several times with the same results. I wonder if maybe your FF is having a conflict with another app or maybe a setting. Each machine has its own unique set of user defined settings and collection of apps.

Not my best video but you get the idea.

That mimics what I see. The OP definitely has some kind of error condition and is not seeing normal FF operation.

Fair enough. Other posters after me are reporting they are not experiencing the issue you just described. Have you considered deleting and reinstalling the Firefox app? Alternatively, if you're able to screen record and showcase the issue, I'm sure everyone on this forum are more than happy to continue helping you in finding a solution ?

Well I’ll muck around with this a little longer and then post a screen recording if all else fails. It both gives me hope and infuriates to know it works for others, sigh. Oh and yes, have reinstalled twice etc. My little mystery for the day continues . . . . wondering if it’s a magic keyboard thing etc etc. Thanks for responses!!

It may very well be a Magic Keyboard issue.

I sometime experience the Magic Keyboard stops registering any typing when I initiate multitasking in split-screen or slide over. To resolve the issue, I have to (a) turn off the iPad screen using the hardware button and turn it on again, or (b) unattached and reattach the Magic Keyboard. When you're trying to just get your work done, these small things can be absolutely infuriating, especially for a tablet and keyboard accessory that cost this much. Small things add up and it's why I'm always hesitant to recommend the iPad as a complete laptop or computing replacement.

I really sympathise that you're having an issue with Firefox tabs and hope we can resolve this for you.

Wow . . . . guess what . . . it’s TOTALLY a magic keyboard thing! I remove the iPad from the MKB and voila! Tab exits work fine. Wow. But if the close tabs function works on ALL other ios browsers, then I presume that it’s a Firefox issue more than a MKB issue? In any event, since I use MKB most of the time it still looks like ‘adios to FF. Dang! Thanks for all the input.

Glad we pinpointed where the issue was coming from ? I think you're right that if it doesn't fit into your workflow, it's probably better to wave adios to FF for the time being unfortunately.

I'm hoping that the Magic Keyboard and Firefox are improved over time so you don't have to make such a choice in the future.

Got me curious so I connected a Logitech K380 Bluetooth keyboard to my 12.9 and the issue occurs with it, too. It persisted after I disconnected the keyboard until I fully closed out and reopened FF. I then tried with no keyboard but with a mouse - Logitech MX Master 3. Same problem there, also had to fully close out to restore functionality after turning the mouse off. And the same occurs with the Logitech Combo Touch case, which uses the Smart Connector and is not Bluetooth. So, it's a compatibility problem with physical devices in general, not just the MK.

Edit: Just for clarity and completeness, I should have said "physical input devices, Bluetooth or Smart Connector" - attached storage has no effect.

Good sleuthing! And so in the end . . . glad to know it isn’t “just me” ?

Same here. I also tried all of my tests with AssistiveTouch on and off - didn't make a difference.
Getting ready to go out to eat with the family. Will do some more testing when I get back. I have 2 external BT keyboards I can try and 2 wireless BT mice. I will also try the LCT again. I'll let the thread know my results and maybe even make another video. This is a mystery.

Ok! Back from a great meal out with the family. On to the tests. I did two tests with two different setups and got some interesting results. Also tested the LCT again and got the same results. FF works perfectly with my LCT.

1. Logitech Ultrathin Touch Mouse t630 and Microsoft Wedge Mobile BT Keyboard

Can I ask why so many people are against Chrome on the iPad and iPhone?

Is it just because Google mines more data, or something else?

I currently use Chrome on my Mac, iPad, and iPhone and it seems to work flawlessly. I’ve never had an issue. The only reason I was thinking to change to Safari is to use the built-in password manager. I really need to strengthen all my passwords and using a password manager seems to be best option to do it. And since I use Apple for everything, it seems like using Safari would be the best way to go about it.

I use Safari on all my Apple devices because it syncs and plays well in the eco system. I use Chrome on my Windows machines because they don't make Safari for Windows anymore. Safari just does stuff automatically that the others don't.

For what it’s worth, chrome sinks across all of my devices. Favorites, history, cookies, everything.
But maybe there’s more to it that I’m missing, maybe Safari would give more functionality that I don’t know about.

Yeah, I used to use Chrome on all my devices because of the syncing capabilities, but when it makes me ask for a desktop website, it just annoyed me. To the point that I just stopped using it. I like Safari for iPadOS because you can add extensions to it, like AdBlock and others. And it just renders websites as the desktop version automatically. It also syncs everything across all Apple devices.

Do you use Safari to manage your passwords? As I mentioned, that’s one of the main reasons I’m thinking about switching.

I think I may have just found me a Saturday afternoon project :)

Yes, Safari manages all my passwords. Just like iPhones and iPad save passwords in the iCloud Keychain. If you don't already have it turned on in settings...

Here is a good article with instructions for managing passwords in Safari, iOS and iPadOS.
