What is the logic behind this?

IMG_4E8782896552-1.jpeg

I don't want to turn on Sync Library because this then has the negative effect of meaning ALL my unchecked songs from my PC sync to my phone so I get a whole bunch of Christmas songs etc...

I find Apple Music quite frustrating sometimes!

Turn of cellular data for Apple Music and just download the songs you want on your phone. That's how I do it.

The song in your screenshot is already in your library. I can tell that because it gives you the option to "delete from library". It also gives you the option to download the track to your device, which is what you are saying I think.

My problem is that I cannot add tracks from Apple Music into my library in the first place.

That was my whole original question.. I don’t want to turn that on because it then syncs all my unticked songs onto my phone which is super annoying. My question was why do you need sync library to be turned on just to add a track to your library..?

I think the OP's issue is that he doesn't want his Apple Music home PC library on his iPhone…and I don't mean downloaded songs.

An Apple Music subscriber only gets ONE user-manageable library with Apple Music. If you want to play random songs from it but not hear the Christmas songs (or other particular songs) you'll have to make a playlist that excludes those songs.

A per-device Apple Music library would be a feature request.

But if you have "Automatic Downlads" turned off, no Songs are added to your phone.

That's not true. There were absolutely no songs added to my iPhone. But I checked my settings first, of course (something many people don't want to do, apparently) ?

I do want my home PC library on my phone but only the checked songs! Which I can do, via normal syncing, but then I can’t add additional songs to my library on my phone without enabling Library Sync, which then means ALL songs from my home pc go onto the phone including all the unchecked ones…

Do you have the songs, you want on your phone, on your phone right now? If yes, turn "Automatic Downloads" off and activate "Sync Library".

Settings/Music on your phone.
On the following screenshot you can see how it looks on my iphone. The songs with the arrow were on my phone before I started using Apple Music and since I have turned off cellular for it, the songs from Apple Music (but not downloaded to my phone) are not playing when I am listening to music.

OK I have turned on Sync Library, and now I see Automatic Downloads - it is already set to "Off"

So now my unchecked music from my PC should not sync to my phone..?

If the christmas songs are showing as downloaded on your phone, you did something wrong. Are they showing under "Downloaded" on your phone?
