Wide Email and Sideways presents Lanscape email!

Now we can type our email in landscape, send to the mail.app and email away! I guess its better than nothing, right? I have not bought the app ($1.99) but I saw it under new releases from app shopper.

Yes, I find this very suspicious. How could four or five different developers have the same idea and very nearly the same implementation in each case so close together. Even more odd is they were all added to the App store at the same time!

Did Apple intentionally hold up the release of earlier submissions and then let them loose together?

Of course people will be angry if Apple decides to enable landscape mode in it's e-mail app, making these apps worthless. And they should be upset. Locking an app to landscape, providing a textbox and a keyboard is not a difficult thing to do. It's about one step above a flashlight app

I think apple was planning to reject then, but based on new smartphone competition and bad press about banning other apps, they had a chafe of heart.

I've seen this type of thing happen a LOT already in the App Store, so it's very possible. Apple knows the app acceptance process can take quite a while, and varies per submission. Out of fairness, they may hold similar apps that get submitted around the same time and release them all together -- so that no developer blames them later that their sales suffered due to a hold up in submissions, and a competing app made it to the store quicker.

Or it could just be a reoccurring coincidence.

I'm just SHOCKED that one of these sideway e-mail developers is charging $5 for their app! Only one of them has the right idea (99 cents), and will surely get all the sales...

I'm shocked that Apple accepted these apps, given their reticence to accept apps that they perceive as stepping on the toes of the internal apps (in this case, Mail). The logic of accepting this and rejecting, say, podcaster....

It's not totally implausible... they do get a cut of the sales. It is also rather curious that they all dropped at exactly the same time, so it's more believable that decided to release them all now themselves vs. them all being submitted at the same time and making it through on coincidence. I could also see it as 'throwing the developers a bone' so they can potentially make some money on it before it becomes completely irrelevant if the native app incorporates this shortly.

Frankly though, I'd have preferred that app that we know was denied that would have allowed viewing Gmail in threaded-mode more than this. That's what I'm most hoping they improve in later native mail app updates...

I kind of wish that there were some reviews of each. Mac About Town's Sideways looks like it has more functions on screen, but it is hard to tell really. Compose weighing in at $4.99 for an app that appears to do what others do for less appears ok. LizzardWerks Wide E-mail looks good and has the "send to mail" button there. I wonder how others function as well. TouchType looks good and is 99 cents, meaning it is my choice ATM.

Guess we can go down the line. If Touchtype sucks then buy Sideways as it is the next one up in terms of pricing. /shrug

I agree with the rest. These may have gotten through to earn some cash while we sit waiting for a major firmware update. Once that hits we'll see landscape mode and our money would have already been spent. I'm ok with that personally. Maybe they'll work on copy/paste.

Are you just joking? No, you type it in TouchType or whatever app you buy and then hit the little "send to mail" button. There should be one on screen. You then put in the recipient/subject & hit send. That seemed rather obvious to me.

Well you can send email messages from within the notes tool, and a few other applications allow email of text or images. This is not too far outside of the wall.

Just noticed an odd behavior in Wide Email.
If you reply to someone then send it to Mail, then tap cancel in Mail, you don't get the Save/Don't Save dialog...ie you can't save a draft inside Mail.

This is pat, the developer of the program. If Apple's Mail isn't asking to save it, that's a bug on their end. Don't worry though, because any email that you write in Wide Email and send over the Mail gets automatically saved in the "sent drafts" folder in Wide Email -- I designed it like that just in case something weird like that happens, so your writing isn't lost!

You can always go back to Wide Email and retrieve the autosaved draft from the "sent drafts" folder. If you don't see that folder at first (that is, Wide Email opens with a new compose window open) just press "done" and it will take you back to the drafts list, which includes the sent drafts folder.

I'm the developer of Wide Email.

I never really user the landscape keyboard for anything, but I picked this up to give it a try. If my typing speed gets faster on it I can see it being very useful.

Is there any way to send to an e-mail account besides the default account?

I find this to be a great app, and am pleased that it appears that the messages are not being sent to a server and then back to the mail app, is this correct? If so, great work!

Why don't these apps work with SMS? It seems like it would be just as easy for SMS to retrieve the text. Any insight, Pat (xerxes2008)? Is Apple just blocking this function?

I just bought this app and i see the usefulness but i dont completely understand how it works. I have several email accounts on my phone, my default primary account is an exchange account, the other is my yahoo account.

I understand that I can write emails and it will be sent under my default email address, but how do i reply to a email that is in my inbox with the program?

No, that's a built-in behavior of Apple's Mail app. There's no way I can change that. (I'm the developer of Wide Email, for those of you wondering)

That's right, your messages are going straight from Wide Email to Apple's Mail app .. they don't pass through any kind of server first.
