Because it it morally wrong to do so.

I have the wifi, and will not be returning it to get the 3G. The reason is it fits in my routine as I will mainly be using it at home and on the occasion I use it away from home I have mywi. But, if I had decided it was something I wanted to take with me all the time and could use it a lot away from home, then I would be returning it to get a 3G. For those that got the WiFi and now feel that the 3G would be a better fit, then they very well should return it. Eat the 50-70 dollars, get what fits best in your life, and don't look back.

They should have made the restocking fee 35%

Pretty scummy to buy something so you can just use it because you have no self control of your urges like a 3 year old, and expect a full refund. No wonder **** is so screwed up in the US.

+1 as well. People should be free to return them if they want. That is their prerogative, however it's the same mentality as people who want their cake and eat it too. The same mentality of people who consume more than they produce and like the idea of a welfare state. You get the point... Play on playa.

Would someone point me to the article where Apple said wifi ipads will be exchanged for 3g+wifi ones or is it pure speculation at this point?

It's the possibility that someone could return their iPad past the 14 day return period in order to get an iPad 3G that has people on this thread upset.

Yeah I know a few people who set out to defraud companies just becuase they allow them to. It's pretty despicable actually, and I can't help but think that somehow I will end up footing the bill.

But I don't think It's really a moral issue, more like a trailer park issue.

Then again, if it's very neccesary

WTF :D

I was so anxious to get one, I thought about doing this for a minute (child side of my brain at work)...but then I remembered how I hate waste and I just couldn't justify it (adult brain kicked in). So, I'm waiting for mine like a good girl.

It's like buying an article of clothing for one event, and then returning it after that use. The intention of keeping it was never there to begin with, and that's why it is wrong.

Apple's return policy is not in question....a person's integrity is.

It depends though. What if you really needed this shirt for the game, but you are broke, and have to buy your kid a GI joe for his birthday?

Or put food on the table, or pay for your oxycotin (very urgent this)

Then it's just a matter of getting away with it.

sorry.

I suppose the intention is a big question. If someone purchased a WiFi version intending to use it and then changed their mind, that is one thing, but if they never planned to keep it, that is a totally different story. I knew a guy in college who would buy an entire stereo setup from Best Buy and use it all semester, then just return it at the end. It's guys like him that we have the restocking fee in the first place, and I can't blame the companies for needing it.

Ok, fine. What if this student is paying for his education with a night job and he's a music major and really needs the stereo to bone up?

Then, the company's policies (all legal mind you), are their own responsibility, and if this student takes advantage of a loophole, you shouldn't blame him.

Truth is, I do this myself. If I need, let's say a CD rom drive badly, and mine is in another state, I have in the past gone to Best Buy and taken advantage of them. Mind you, I would rather pay a restocking fee, and I feel very low for doing it, but I soon forget all about it.

Pleased are the forgetful.

Because it it morally wrong to do so.

well, it's NOT morally wrong IMHO.

But it shows a certain atitude to live. None of my friends would do this. Seems I select more for people who don't make decisions on a whimp and who stick with their decision and take responsibility for it. Also I would not hire somebody with this atitude because I wouldn't think he/she would be very reliable in other decisions. But again this is not a big moral issue. It's just taking Apples offer for what it is.

Any estimates on how many current WiFi owners will return their iPads to get the new 3G version on Friday?

Funny how some folks in this thread are bent. Apple makes more money on the 3G price plus long term residuals from ATT. It's a no brainer to allow trade ups. Plus the restock fee offsets the refurb price, all good.

I'm honestly a little irked at the idea.

Apple should not only make them pay a restocking fee, but they should get to the end of the line tomorrow as well.

Sorry, Mac Jones...but you're going to have a hard time convincing me that you 'need' a CD rom bad enough to validate that temporary purchase.

That said, I don't peek at Christmas presents, either, because I'm not seven anymore.

I sleep pretty well at night, too. ;)

Should have gone with the Oxycontin argument on this one, its much more likely.

Who said I was trying to convince anyone?

It's indefensible.

And yes, I'm also mature. When I bought the iPad i didn't even open in the men's room at the Mall like I usually do, and waited till I got outside.

Sorry, Mac, but when you say "let's say...", you're trying to provide reasoning in which to agree with you...no?

Anyway, it's not the kind of lesson I'd teach my kids...how to get away with stuff. I am curious, tho, what would someone say when they return the WiFi for the 3G....? The truth?? That right there should dictate whether it's right or wrong.

Final thought:

"Just because you can doesn't mean you should."

No, it's wrong no doubt.

But it's unethical not immoral.

And under certain circumstances may also be practical.

Idealism is foolishness in the face of necessity,

I actually think it's ridiculous people think it's morally wrong.

I'm paying money for a product that I feel falls short of what it could be hence, I'd like to upgrade, fee or not.

Perfectly fine.

Wifi, I have found, is not enough for how I'd like to use the product.
