a better place
I actually took it that there wasn't going to be plans in place for the rest until then. Did i miss him saying (the audio i was listening too was choppy) that it would not go on sale until June/July also? I thought the point was it will be available, but we don't expect to have the same type of options until then.

Hmmmmm.......

With the keynote it's what is specifically not displayed thats important.

Worldwide availability of Wifi in 60 days
3G available in 90 days (meaning USA) and international by June/July (the rest of us)..... Otherwise display would have said worldwide availability with contracts in place by June/July. Here is a case of Apple semantics at work. :)

When I visited the UK last year, I found WiFi to be spotty at hotels and usually an extra $10/night. I had my MacBook with me and simply purchased a mobile broadband PAYG USB stick for $30. Best of both worlds as I had broadband when I needed it, without the cost. This is where the iPad fails compared to a multi-purpose device like a netbook or laptop which can be adapted much more easily and cheaply.

Here
I would choose the 3G version. I don't want to sound like i'm bragging but for only $30 I don't mind the monthly bill. And cancellation at any time is always available.

MicroSim is a smaller verison of the current simcards. It's a micro version of it. ;)

A SIM card is the little chip in a GSM cell phone that holds your subscriber information. A micro SIM, also known as a 3FF or "third form factor" SIM, is a smaller version of a SIM card that holds the same data, but is not physically compatible with larger SIM cards like the ones used by AT&T and T-Mobile.

3FF SIMs were developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute to fit into devices too small for a regular SIM. Where a regular SIM measures 15 millimeters x 25 mm, a 3FF SIM card measures 12mm x 15mm.

Would it be possible for there to be a micro sim adapter? Much like micro SD cards? Or am is the tech completely incompatible?

If the iPhone can be tethered to the iPad to share internet access.... then wi-fi for me definitely ... GPS-less iPad I can live without, as I never use the GPS on the iPhone (only ever use my cars built-in GPS).

So if it can be tethered... ace!

Wi-Fi hotspots where I live are few and far between (Perth, Australia) I don't want to be parking outside MacDonalds everytime I want/need internet access on the road.

thanks for such an informative post. ironic, isn't it, that the smaller SIM card goes in the larger product? maybe subsequent iPhones will use the microSim?

WiFi.

I use a 4g WiMax usb key from Clear that I use with my laptop, and if I pay an additional $130 I can buy a Clear Spot portable hotspot. That way, I won't have to pay an additional $30/month for portable wireless, and I'll get the blazingly fast 4g speeds.

The only downside is that if I use WiMax with an iPad, I'll have to call it a MaxiPad, and that'll probably get me slapped.

I just watched this section of the keynote (had only listened before), i'm still not hearing it this way. I'm still hearing it as available in the 60/90 days and if you have a sim that works, great, otherwise, we will get you great deals in June/July.

I guess time will tell!
