I was wondering that if there are still plenty of apps that does not natively support 10.5 ipad.

Will they ever get the support for the screen size as it was there for such short time and new Ipads in the future are coming out with 9.7", 11" or 12.9" screens?

Why would defelopers invest time for this size anymore?

It’s all guessing but on my opinion if the app in question has not been updated for the 10.5 by now it never will anyway as the developer seems to have lost interest.

Apple has made it very easy for developers to handle different device screen sizes. Ideally all non-gaming apps should be using Auto Layout and Size Classes. When both are used together all positioning of text and controls automatically adjust to different screens. For games (in C++, Unity, etc.) all developers have to do is detect the screen size and adjust the content accordingly.

If you come across any apps that don't properly support the 10.5" screen size then you have found some lazy developers.

i am trying to desise if i should by 10.5 or 11".

Of corse i would like to get the new but worried about things like
  • bendind (i teavel a lot with Ipad always stuffed to my bag with other electronics or in the plain seat net)
  • the wifi issue with usb-c to 3.5mm
  • if the ipad does not go fully silent (use it in bed my wife sleeping next to me)
Then again, old ipad has shorter life span and i am worried about the app resolution support. It would have that sweet 3.5mm jack.

I haven’t had any issue with the iPad Pro 11”. It is in my laptop bag every day along with my work notebook and sometimes my MacBook. Never a problem.

As for silent, it is. Not sure what you are referring to.

I don’t use the 3.5mm adapter so can’t soeak to the Wi-Fi issue.

I can’t see those developers who have been dragging their feet, going back to support the 10.5.

I bought 11 yesterday and returned it today. Ended up going with a 10.5, got it for $524 + tax. Things I missed on the 11 were the split keyboard, headphone jack and the lightning connection. Face ID worked great , probably better than it did does on my Xr but touch ID will be fine for me. Nothing really stood out as a must have to justify giving up the three things I missed and the price difference.

As a 10.5" user for over a year i have not had any issues that bug me enough to even have remembered this was a concern.

With the surprise Air 3, looks like the 10.5” screen size will live on.

On a side note, the iPad lineup is:
7.9
9.7, might change to 10.2
10.5
11 in a different aspect ratio
12.9

It’s like Apple is trying to troll app developers. (7.9 uses 9.7 apps though)

It’s actually not that hard to make apps scale. However fragmentation is now sort of an issue on iOS, and that wasn’t the case until around 2015 or so.

Same thing for iPhones:

- 4”
- 4.7”
- 5.5’
- 5.8”
- 6.1 and 6.5” (XR and MAX have the same number of points)

Back in Steve Jobs days, fragmentation was the first thing he cut. Now we are back to where he started. Coincidence?

The 10.5 is sort of strange one off size. Since apps work, imperfectly, but work on the 10.5, I would not be surprised if developers did not make any 10.5 specific changes. And if Apple made some library tweaks perhaps apps could support 10.5 with little or no additional developer effort.

Apple was on its ass back then and tiny compared to now.

Not really.

Their size wasn’t very different.

And in a few years there is a good chance they will go back to 2015 levels.

They need to have just 2 iPhones. Each in 2 sizes. At most have one mini phone in addition that’s really small. That’s it.

These 5 iPhones need to cover all price points from USD 500 to 1500. And should be upgraded each year. They shouldn’t need to sell old phones.

But it does take some effort. So there has to be some rationale behind the screen size differences. I can’t figure out what that would be in the case of the 10.5” and 11” screen sizes. The difference in surface area is something like 6%. Why did they even bother?

Still waiting for some apps to update for the 11" - Eurosport Player and NFL GamePass, for example. This is particularly annoying as they are both video streaming apps with large vertical bars in landscape.

10.5” isn’t one off anymore since the new Air 3 adopted the screen size. Who knows where Apple will go from here though.

I do not even have any issues with my 11” iPad Pro, and unsupported applications.

Every app or game I own has full screen support.
Not sure if you’re referring to my post, but if so—my question was/is simply: what is the reason for making negligibly different screen sizes?

They wanted to reduce the bezels, but did not want to reduce the length of the device as it would mean reducing the size of the Smart Keyboard, making it harder to use. At the same time they did not want a wider device, hence the non-standard aspect ratio.

Of course the referenced Apple from the mid 90ies was a very different company compared to today. 2015 wasn’t a reference point.

The guy was talking of 2015.

Apple of 2015 wasn't as fragmented as today.

It has got nothing to do with the year.

Yes, Apple can't sell just 1 iPhone today.

But to sell 10+ iPhones directly and 15+ including indirectly sold ones is certainly fragmented. Almost as much as Android manufacturers, if not more.

He referred to Steve’s return to Apple in 97/98 when he cut down strongly on the fragmentation. Hence the comment.

That's correct.

Apple doesn't need as few products now as it had in 97. But the current catalog definitely needs to be cleaned.

Although the specifics are different, he is correct in his essence.

97 was one extreme. 2019 is another.

2014/2015 was more like where they need to get to again.

And what makes you think Apple needs to clean the catalogue up? Phone sales are down and likely won’t grow significantly again. They’ll likely phase out the oldest models with Touch ID - would be my guess and replace XS and XR with newer models while some carriers will sell off that old stock.

The problems Apple had in 97 and 2019 are hardly comparable. One was a broke company with zero popular products and one is among the richest companies with over 2 billion devices of the iOS type sold already. They might not require the same strategy in order for them to thrive.
