They wanted to reduce the bezels, but did not want to reduce the length of the device as it would mean reducing the size of the Smart Keyboard, making it harder to use. At the same time they did not want a wider device, hence the non-standard aspect ratio.
Ah I could see the keyboard being the compelling reason for maintaining the length. But as far as changing the aspect ratio just to maintain the same width, that’s still a little puzzling. I would think maintaining the aspect ratio is more important than maintaining the width of the previous generation, but maybe that’s just me.

I would have preferred that too, particularly as many apps still look awful with the black bars, but it seems as though there was pushback somewhere against making the device wider, the feeling perhaps that it would be regarded as more bulky, less portable.
