Makes sense to refresh it yearly. For $600 16e is barely competitive now. In 6 months there will be 16 will drop to $700 and 18 with 120hz display and new features will be available for $800. 16e will make even less sense.

It find a niche in the corporate market, where the price differences adds up when you are buying a lot of phones. The phone has a good sized screen and the features most businesses need, so why pay more?

Given this lineup, it's unclear whether Apple will continue the "e" series with an iPhone 17e. Indeed, as of now, there are no specific rumors or reports suggesting that Apple will release an iPhone 17e this year or next
What I heard from industry is that Apple plans to release the “essentials” (the e on iPhone 16e stands for “essentials”) every year. This is to better compete with Google’s Pixel “a” series and Samsung Galaxy “A” series. Plan is for cost to build the phone to down after each generation and hoping to lower the cost back down to $429 in the future.
The introduction of the iPhone 17 Air may represent Apple's approach to providing a mid-tier option, potentially replacing the need for an "e" variant
False. Apple’s midtier option will be the standard iPhone model and the “air” version for thinner device. Like I said previously, the “e” model is specifically going to be the low cost model for those on the budget. (You can practically can get the phone for free via carrier deals after trade in billing credits, and if you buy it from Apple via Carrier deal, unless you go with monopolistic $&?#%€£ that is AT&T, you can get the phone fully unlocked)

Apple's unveiling on Wednesday of the iPhone 16e, which replaced the iPhone SE line, marked a strategic shift in the company's flagship smartphone lineup. Starting at $599, the iPhone 16e offers a 6.1-inch OLED display, Face ID, an A18 chip, and a USB-C port, positioning it as a more affordable alternative within the iPhone 16 family. Does that mean we should expect an iPhone 17e to be added to the upcoming iPhone 17 series?

Apple's iPhone 17 lineup is expected to feature four models: iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and a new ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air that replaces the existing Plus model. The iPhone 17 Air is rumored to have a significantly thinner design with an aluminum chassis and a 6.6-inch display, aiming to offer a balance between portability and performance.

Given this lineup, it's unclear whether Apple will continue the "e" series with an iPhone 17e. Indeed, as of now, there are no specific rumors or reports suggesting that Apple will release an iPhone 17e this year or next. The introduction of the iPhone 17 Air may represent Apple's approach to providing a mid-tier option, potentially replacing the need for an "e" variant. However, without official confirmation or credible leaks, the existence of an iPhone 17e remains speculative.

One possibility is that Apple releases an iPhone 17e next year around the same February window, using the model's launch as a way to reinvigorate its flagship lineup mid-cycle. Apple could choose to do this each year. It's a more exciting strategy than simply offering new iPhone colors in the spring, which Apple has done in the past. Alternatively, it may opt to release "e" series iPhone models based on a non-linear roadmap, similar to the iPhone SE. The first-generation iPhone SE was released on March 2016, while the second-generation model arrived in April 2020, and the third-generation iPhone SE came in March 2022.

As Apple continues to evolve its iPhone strategy, the success of the iPhone 16e in the coming months may ultimately determine whether we'll see future "e" variants alongside the main iPhone lineup. In that sense, iPhone 16e sales figures and user feedback may be the best gauge as to where Apple might head next.

We need to chill out man, the iPhone 16e isn’t even available yet… and we already starting to talk about the iPhone 17e…

No, there's no way Apple will replace it in 7 months.
It will most likely be replaced next year by a 18e model.
Well the 17e could also be delayed compared to the regular 17. Maybe next February or March while the 17 will be released in September 2025.

Come on, you've been around here long enough to realize we'd be complaining about the 17e and its lack of features and how the 18e will be so much better before the 16e was released.

Later today

"What to expect with iPhone 19 - Here's what we know!"

I imagine the 16e will stay in the lineup, alongside the 16 as the budget options to the four 17 models. Maybe even step down to US$549 or something.

I think Apple is trying to keep their hand in the mid-price game as global recession (due to clown politics by a certain superpower) seems inevitable.

I think I’ll wait until the iPhone 18e, with a stunning A20 built on 2nm, a second gen modem C2, and hopefully 12GB of RAM.

They probably won’t do this “e” lineup every year. The next one will be the 19e or 20e, 3-4 years from now. The point of the budget iPhone is to wait for material and technology to be cheap enough to implement in a budget model and that will take around 3-4 years. At the minimum the iPhone 20e will probably have the Dynamic Island, MagSafe and other pro flagship technology & designs that have phased out.

And at that time you could still decide between a 16e, 17 Air, 17 Pro, normal 17, 18e, 18 Air, 18 Pro, maybe an 18 Pro Max? What about a Plus? Or preowned 16, 16 Pro or 16 Pro max?

I love the simplicity of all this

Might be easier to just throw a dart at a photo of the lineup and decide that way

Makes sense to release an "e" variant every February - March. It's a similar approach that Google follows with the Pixel "a" variant or Samsung with Galaxy "FE".
Exactly, Apple is now mirroring that approach, after they realized that it’ll be more competitive and profitable. It also gives them a way to use the lower-binned SoCs of each generation.

Since the 16e is now synonymous with the 16-generation iPhone line, I believe there will be faster turnaround for these cheaper iPhones.
Not necessarily. I mean they were still selling the 14/se up until yesterday.

I could see them dropping the older models for the 17 release and only having the iPhone 16e as a budget device and refreshing it next year.

I never really understood why apple still sold two generation old iPhones bc I might as well
Just pay an extra $100 to get the new ones.

The vast majority of users don’t even understand what a 120hz display does. When buying a phone it doesn’t even make my list of wants.
Exactly. This argument they make about screen refresh rate always makes me laugh.

Bc 98 percent of the iPhone users have no idea what it is and does. Heck I didn’t until a year ago.

And even then it really isn’t interesting.

To be fair the iPhone X only had a 10 month sale window before it was discontinued and that was the first major refresh we had for iPhones.

So I wouldn’t entirely say no way.

They don't need to release 17e, they can keep 16e for a couple of years, while reducing the price and keeping it as "budget" in Apple's terms. Once the 18 or even 19 comes out, they will update it.

It's curious to move from SE (no attached number to indicate age) to "16e" though

In a couple years, it's going to be a tough sell as the perception will be "wow, a 16?...that's old"

Either there is an iPhone 16e Plus at $599 or iPhone 16e Mini at $499.

Good point, but I don't think they care, nor do the customers who are looking for a cheaper iPhone. Those who care, would go for at least a regular model.

I'm as much of a small phone evangelist as you'll find and I've come to terms with Apple having no interest in keeping me as an iPhone customer

We are never getting another Mini, barring a leadership change

(I'll be the first here to eat my words if I'm wrong -- I'd be delighted to be wrong on this)

My guess: for the next few years, the iPhone 16e will not get an update, since the phone is aimed for a much smaller audience than the regular iPhone 16 models. Even more so if the C1 modem chip can closely match the Qualcomm Snapdragon X70 radio modem chip.
